Off topic, but I need major prayers ASAP (New update, post #14)

I need to make a plea for all the prayers I can get on behalf of my mom today. She's been very ill for over 2 years with an illness called gastroparesis - basically it means that her GI system's nerve supply has stopped working, so food does not move through at all, and she gets no nourishment. If she tries to eat, she gets violently ill from the food never being digested, so she has lost a dangerous amount of weight - she's nearly emaciated. Without a significant change in this illness her doctor feels it will prove terminal before the year's end because she will simply starve to death. There is a procedure that has just begun being done that could potentially save her life (implanting a pacemaker, like the ones for heart patients, into her stomach to stimulate nerve activity), and she has a meeting with the only local surgeon who does this surgery today at 4 pm MST. Apparently they are very, very restrictive as to who can get this done and insurance will be very tough to convince. Our family is terrified that we may lose Mom to this illness unless she receives a miracle. Mom means the world to me, and she is the spiritual and emotional center of our family.
I think we can use all the calls to God on her behalf that people are willing to give us at this point. If you wish to, please pray for God's hand in this process to allow her to receive this operation and get insurance coverage, and that good things come from this surgeon's visit today and that real plans for this surgery can be made. Or if thats not in God's plan, for Him to give her a cure in another way. I'm sending this out because I am afraid my mom may not live to see my daughter be born in November, and its a very real possibility at this point. I'm a total mess thinking that I may lose her so quickly.

Thank you so much, ladies, for all your prayers and pleas on her behalf.

-Lisa

**UPDATE: The doctor said he would do the surgery (thank God!), so now the next step is to get the part ordered. The part can't be ordered until the insurance company approves them, so please please please pray for the insurance company to ok the procedure. Step one of several is past us, but there's still a LOT that needs to happen to give my mom her life back. Please keep us in your prayers!**

my best friend has had this condition for her entire life...and the pace-makers are the reason she's still here.

the mayo clinic placed them in her...she has one for her stomach, and another for her kidneys. the first sticks out about three inches in front of her, and you can visibly see it...but with the pacer, jen can eat almost normally.

she's not able to eat meat, and she has to drink a good portion of her meals...but she CAN eat.

i'm definitely praying that your mother will be a candidate and be able to receive said pacer. i don't know if they are still accepting candidates...but my friend is in a research study...and that's covered much of her costs. good luck.

Oh gosh, Lisa, I am so sorry. I can't imagine how stressful and upsetting this must be for you--I totally wouldn't function if my mom were sick like that. Please take care of yourself and know that we are all thinking and praying for you.

The surgeon has agreed to do the procedure - this is the same doctor who turned her down for the operation 3 weeks ago because he said she was not "close enough to death to make it worth it.": But he says he will do it now. But the insurance company has to approve the operation and the neurostimulator ( which costs $100,000) before it can be ordered and shipped from the Mayo Clinic, so its all in the hands of the heartless corporation now. We wait.

Mom is going into the hospital today to get a TPN line inserted- its an IV into her arm or neck that administers a constand flow of liquid fat/protein into he bloodstream. She's so sick now that she can;t even keep liquids in, and she risks organ failure if they dont get some nutrition into her. The last time she had one of these lines, she developed a life-threatening staph infection within 3 days. Its dangerous, but its all they can do.

I'm just so scared. She's only 54.

Oh wow, I missed the first post earlier this week. I am SO sorry that you are going through this. It's great that the doc has reconsidered though and I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers (and you mama, for your stress and heartache).
