What to wash the baby things in??

I was just wondering what is good to wash the baby clothing in? I think that Dreft would be BAD! Keep in mind that I have no access to a natural food store. I use Purex Free on our clothing. I just use a little. But I love good smelling baby clothes.

Im just going to use something "free and clear." Same stuff I use to wash diapers. ( I just buy whatever is on sale) Seventh Generation stuff would probably work too!

Gain in the washing machine. Then I dry it all. Nothing special. I wash DH's really dirty stuff alone, but all of the kid/baby/my stuff gets washed together.

I have just switched over to All Free and Clear. This is what we used for ds when he was little.

I used a small amount of ALL free and clear with dd. She never had any problems with it. I used half the amount suggested, and then did an extra rinse cycle. I plan on doing that again. I am not going to pay a lot of $ for dreft or any other specialty detergent.

I just switched over to using Charlie's and love it. I do all of our clothes in it. It actually has worked out to be cheaper than what I was paying for my regular detergent before! And the shipping is free.

www.drugstore.com has free shipping on over $25 orders which I think is a steal since laundry soap is heavy! Look up laundry soap and there are a bunch of more natural soaps listed. And they used to have Seventh Generation.. they might still.

Costco has an Ecos laundry soap. I use that a lot - it's cheaper. A lot of grocery stores and drug stores have a couple of natural soaps.

Is Charlie's a natural detergent?

I used a bit of Purex free and clear, with a white vinegar rinse.

If you can't get access to any of the natural brands I would use the All Free and Clear. Its cheap and works well and you can get it in bulk at the club stores like BJs.

I don't think I've ever used a specific "baby" detergent. I use All Free and Clear for pretty much everything.

I heard there's a new Arm and Hammer detergent that's pretty natural and reasonably priced, and I want to try it, but dh bought one of the gigantic bottles of All last time, so I need to use that up.

Here is the link to Charlie's Soap www.charliesoap.com .

You can buy the Laundry detergent in powder or liquid. I started out with the 3lb bag and am just getting ready to reorder, but am going to go for the 5 gallon bucket! Shipping is free on everything.

I have a top loader that requires an HE detergent and I am using cloth dipes. I fretted over what detergent to use, but I really like the Charlie's Soap so far. I opted for the powder instead of the liquid. I had never used a powder detergent before, but am very happy with it.

"Baby" detergents are usually just detergents with fragrances added. I don't get that at all.

I think it's a lot healthier to use a detergent without any fragrances. All that perfume cannot be good for a newborn's delicate skin and senses. I know I can't tolerate it! I can smell detergent fragrances on people's clothes just by sitting near them.

Looks like Charlie's Soap might last a heck of a long time but cost the same as other natural soaps. Yay! I will have to give it a try.

I have been using Ecos due to DD crazy sensitive skin and for DS when his excema acts up. I think that since it is a more natural detergent and is ok for them, it should be fine for a newborn. I agree with the pp, why do they try to charge us so much money for a special baby soap that is loaded with additives and fragrance? (note: Ecos does have fragrance, but they are from natural sources like grapefruit).

we bump between different naturals (love allens) and purex. I love purex for dipes...no build up issues, etc.

Dreft is such a marketing scam.

No crap! I herd it is one of the worst out there as far as harsh chemicals go! And the doc told me to soak my bottom in it after birth!!:

I am using purex free now and have used All free and clear a ton too! I thought about trying Shakley. Anyone used that stuff??

We currently use All Free & Clear on clothes and Allen's Naturally (works great!) on diapers, but are considering switching to Charlie's Soap for both clothes and diapers. Allen's Naturally hasn't worked as well on clothes as I would like, and we gave it a good try.

I know some people think it's a scam, but Dreft is the only detergent that I've found that I'm not allergic to!: Even some of the "natural" ones give me hives and itchy red bumpies. I'm even afraid to try some of the Free-and-Clear ones, b/c my reactions can be so horrible! So we wash everything in Dreft, and I double rinse, too. Believe me, there are times when I wish I could use something cheaper, b/c it's sure pricey! But the skin aggravation just isn't worth it to me....

I've heard great things about Purex for dipes if you don't have access to more things like Charlies. I'm going to switch to Charlies for most of our stuff at least as a try-out because I can get it locally and have heard really great things. I also love that you are only supposed to use like a Tbsp per load..
