Don't know about the gauze, but I have a birdseye diaper that was mine over 30 years ago. It went through 2 kids then, and it is now in dd's rotation. Birdseye is super durable!

Because of the multiple-thread weave that makes birdseye birdseye, it *is* more durable than gauze. Twill (often used for prefolds) is even more durable.
