Insurance considers pregnancy to be a condition or disease basically.
it depends on the insurance. the nys low-cost insurance i bought did not consider it a pre-existing condition; the student insurance that was our other option did. so don't stress yet!

Oh, Mama. Insurance stress is awful. Ugh. What a barbaric country we live in...

I hope you get this cleared up soon and with as little anxiety as possible.

Update!

After some trepidation, and lots of prayer, here's how I'm going to have this baby :

Apparently there was a misprint in my husband's employment offer, stating that we're elligible for insurance coverage October 1, rather than November 1. They've decided to honor the error (gotta love law firms, who take these things seriously), and I'll have coverage within several weeks! The plan gives me access to an excellent medical center, just 2 minutes away, doesn't consider pregnancy pre-existing, and will cover the baby for 30 days after birth.

Last night, I found my homebirth midwife! I just knew she was the one, and couldn't be more content with our choice. It turns out that her fees are more reasonable than any other MW I've interviewed. She can deliver breech, and allows women to go beyond 42 weeks if healthy, which further reduces my chance of transfer to OB care or hospital.

And a really lovely bonus: DH isn't yet elligible for vacation/sick time/FMLA, so we thought he'd have to be back at work immediately after the birth. For several reasons, having family help isn't an option, and I wasn't sure how to manage being home alone with the new baby. DH somehow arranged to take a week off work, with completely flexible timing! It will be so good to have him around!

Thank you all for your ideas and support! I'm feeling very grateful and very blessed right now.
