Anyone else getting off to a slow start?

We usually approach September with plans to start "schooling", yet life gets in the way

Dd's birthday is tomorrow (she will be 12, how does that happen??) She is having a small party on Saturday and right now it looks like it will be raining, so we are cleaning! I also had until the end of August to turn in the kids paperwork/ evals/ new IHIP's.

I love this time of year. When it is still warm we really enjoy playing outside and swimming as long as we can. We just recieved our Rainbow Resources order today We usually start with seasonal activities, apple picking, studying the changing leaves, we read a lot. I suppose next week we will look at the new math, history and science biographies we have. The kids are excited about all that, now if only I could get ready

Me! There is so much other "life" stuff to do that I can't seem to get into the swing of "school." We're slowly easing into it as I get a feel for the curriculum I bought. I've already discovered I'll be tweaking here and there.

We tried to start in August and it was going okay but a death in the family dropped a bomb on everything so we took some time off. Then there were some family visits and heavy house cleaning to catch up on.
We're getting back to it and hopefully this week we can finish a whole week on our schedule.

Well, we're fluctating -- flowing, if you will :

We had a nice summertime schedule going as a means for transitioning to my returning to college, but that backfired so we're taking it extra slow now ... I wait for her to ask to do an activity

She's coming with to my Spanish & Education college courses for a whole month, though & also starting a handful of classes through the learning cooperative, so I'm not really worried: I'm sure that by the time the weather is too bad to be outdoors for 3 hours straight then we'll be busier with more educational indoor activities (she's just gaining different type of literacy outdoors in the meantime)

We're off to a slow start too. We're building a new home and that's totally consuming our lives right now. On the other hand, ds has helped w/things in the construction process. So while that might not be traditional school for a 5 year old, I think he's learning an incredible amount by being w/his dad and the Amish who are building our home.

Even though I still get caught up in the "back to school" excitement of the fall and try to get us into more of a rhythm after the summer, I really prefer doing fewer outside (meaning away-from-home, not just going outside) activities in the summer. It is so hot and everywhere is so busy -- we'll often go outside to play in the morning and evening, but spend the afternoon inside with the fans on and the shades drawn, and it's a great time for reading together, either out loud or individually, or playing games and such. And then the fall is such a great time for going out with all of the harvest-related activities, fairs, etc. and the museums and such not busy. Spring is a good time for us to go out too.

So, yes and no. We are spending more time on school-y looking things, but our summer was interrupted with a longish move and that changed my plans. At the same time, I'm close to giving birth and trying to take it easy right now, so that's keeping us from going out so much right now. So I guess we're getting a slow start with the things I would rather be doing -- museums, playgrounds, nature hikes -- and a good start on more academic stuff, since I do have the energy to sit on the couch and read out loud and play coin and dice games and tell the kids how to spell words when they're writing stuff in their many notebooks.

I do itch to buy books and stuff at this time of year. I'm making myself not order anything else until October.

Slow start as well. In fact, I have reserved Fridays as "do nothing days", so really we only do maybe 2hrs of work a day times 4 days. I am loving it so far.

We are definitely off to a slow start. We started with a very light schedule in August and I had hoped to be in full swing by now, but it hasn't happened. I have 3 to teach this year and I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the almost 2 yo. : I am also completely changing around what we are doing, sooooo . . . I am still shopping for curriculum. I have found most of what I need but still need a couple more levels of Math-U-See before we will have everything we need either here or on its way.

So, you are not alone.

Whew! I'm so glad I'm not the only one We are definitely still getting our feet under us. Both girls' birthdays just passed, so that took up quite a bit of time, and this weekend I have a fancy dinner and a formal-type bridal shower for which I have nothing to wear, so I've been stressing over that. Plus my work level (I work from home) went from 0 to 120 in about 8 seconds flat : And I'm still working out what kind of schedule I want us to have. So yeah , we're getting a slow start. I'd feel much worse about it except that it's just K level work, so there's no rush.

I just posted my ranty question because I feel discouraged myself as well. I'm not using a curriculum and don't know what to do each day... This is my 1st yr for both of us (5 yr old my son and me) so I want to make a strong start but... I would like some kind of guide to go by...Anyone want to sell just the teacher's manual of Sonlight or MFW?
