I have a friend that is 36 weeks with twins and getting induced tomorrow

They are both head down too. I was really hoping for her that she could get to at least 37 weeks. DS was born at 37 weeks and it was soooo hard to get him to nurse. It will be so hard for her with 2 born at 36 weeks. I have tried so hard her whole pregnancy to help her to not listen to her super medical doctor. It just makes me so sad. I am sure she is going to end up with a c-section now.

This is sad. I had my twins at 38w3d...twins are not even considered "fullterm" by the medical community until 37 weeks. What in the heck is her doctor thinking delivering them soooo early?! Sounds to me like an OB not wanting to be woken up in the middle of the night to deliver two babies. :

Yep. She said the doc said that she is already 1cm so he doesn't want to wait. WHAT???!!! 1cm, geez I was that forever. I just hate how pushy OBs are, and how accepting women are of their advice.

Wow, that is amazing. My 36 week singleton was only 5 pounds at birth and a sleepy, difficult to rouse nurser. I imagine that twins might be smaller still. And if her dates are even just alittle bit off, she could potentially be less than 36 weeks. That really doesn't seem safe at all to me.

Couldn't agree more. My 37 weeker was 5lbs 5ozs and it took us 3 months to nurse right!

grrr, can you talk her into refusing?

So he's forcing prematurity onto those babies, lovely. Could you warn her about the possible lifelong effects of prematurity?

Totally tried. She could care less. I am just sooo happy it is two girls so I didn't have to get into the whole circ thing. She is 100% into everything medical.
I bought her a Sears book and gave her tons of BFing stuff.

I hardly have any mainstream friends left, and that's why. Choosing convenience over babies' health and well begin, no thanks.

SublimeBirthGirl

I agree.

So what happened?

Isn't the goal for twins to keep them cooking as long as possible? The Doc should be ecstatic about her making it to 36 wks. What's 1 cm, she could walk around with that for weeks. Maybe he's got a cookout planned for the weekend and doesn't want her and her babies to mess it up for him...

I hope her babies are okay. I had mine at 37 weeks because of pre-eclampsia. The ultrasounds at the end predicted my babies would be 7 and nearly 8 lbs each. I was so relieved and felt sure I'd dodged the dreaded NICU. When they were 6-1/2 lbs & 4-1/2 lbs & the smaller baby needed to be observed in the NICU, got jaundice that required bili lights and supplementation with formula before my milk came in. It was no fun. And getting my girls to nurse was a whole lotta work.

Mainstream or not, I imagine any mother would feel a world of guilt chosing to induce early if there were *any* problems. I can't imagine having that nagging doubt in the back of my mind any time anything went wrong if I'd caused it because I couldn't tough out another week or two of a pregnancy.

The *only* thing I can say on behalf of your friend is that a twin pregnancy is really, really, really uncomfortable at the end. Still, you suck it up.

Why do they want to induce?

Because the doc said he didn't think she would "make it through the weekend anyway." :

Oh yes, that really warrants a medical procedure!

How much does he charge for clairvoyant consultation?

Yeah really. What breaks my heart is that I tried to talk to her soooo many times. Maybe I came on too strong? I have a tendency to do that...

: Just subbing to see what the outcome. I hope her babies are okay.....and she avoids a c-section....sounds like a recipe for one already!

Doctors get all nervous about something called twin-to-twin transfusion where one twin grows faster than the other at the other's expense, and it may have something to do with the placenta and mixing of their blood. I am not sure, as I have known of many women going in for caesareans at 35 weeks for this anomaly.

I am sure it happens, but really, every mother of twins I have known for the past twenty years who delivered in the hospital has had their doctor, and then them, worried about this. I live in a large metropolis with plenty of medical centers and teaching centers so maybe that is why.
