ISO options for bedcover w/out the swoosh noise?

I remember this from my first home birth, and was reminded today as I made the bed with the plastic cover over the bottom set of sheets: the horrible swoosh/wrinkle sound that's made every time anyone gets on or moves around on the bed! Now that we're a family of three, who cosleep, I'm not looking forward to that sound, which will likely wake my son (and be so annoying to dh and me). I realize I'm early in doing it but have an intuitive feeling about going early...

Anyway so are there other options that work that are quieter?? Thanks!

i don't have one, but i love this idea from babyworks.com. it is wool - so i don't think it would be waterPROOF and it is a bit pricey. maybe if you got a couple of the smaller sizes and doubled them up?

That's a great idea for a small sized area- you're right, pricey!! $249 for a king size !! Wow! I think I'll keep looking. I just found some tablecloths... I need to check those out and see how water proof they are. I think I need water proof since there will be a lot of blood and afterbirth, etc.
Thanks for your suggestion!

What about using PUL? I bought a few yards and cut it in pieces to make wet bags and liners to go under the sheets...

if you have a pharmacy in town or nearby that sells hospital type supplies you can pick up one of those thick blue sheet protecters they give you at the hospital (well, it's on the bed when you get to your room)....

they are super thick, waterproof and great to use after....i brought mine home bc my nurse said it was ok (guess it depends on the nurse) and it's now on dd's bed for just in case......

i would send it to you (have 2 bc i forgot i bought one locally just in case baby came at home and she almost did...lol..shoulda just stayed home looking back in hindsight) to use but it's heavy.....and shipping would be pricey unless i can fit it in a flat rate....

i can measure it for you if you like....it fit across the bed all the way but i can't remember how tall it is.

Is it like a very large Chux pad? I'll check the stores around here and see. Otherwise, if you're wanting to give one of yours up, I'd be more than happy to pay shipping!! Thanks!

What about a shower curtian?

I put chux under my side of the bed around 37 weeks. We didn't layer the bed with plastic (shower curtains) or the extra sheets until I was in labor.

Cheap Wool!

Ec'ing mamas use an old wool blanket from a surplus or thrift store under the sheets. No swoosh sound, no plastic, and it's very comfortable (wool is breathable in the heat, insulating in cold weather). Wash the blanket on hot and throw it in the dryer before using. This will make the fibers denser and more waterproof. You can even lanolize it, but I don't think that's necessary. We always use wool piddle pads (cut-up wool blanket covered with flannel receiving blankets) and blanket mattress pads after births, and I love them.

The Protect-a-Bed mattress covers are waterproof (I've had to empty them out after taking them out of the washing machine!) and don't have any "sound" or crinkle feeling to them at all. They're really thin, too, and less "sweaty" than many covers. They're not cheap, but cheaper than the wool ones you saw!

The downside is it's hard to get them all the way to the edge of the bed, so you may want to try to get a larger size than you need. Only the part that goes on top of the mattress is waterproofed. The gussets are just fabric, so if they "creep" over the edge, then the edges are unprotected.

They're also totally machine washable/dryable and can withstand sterilization temperatures.

I used a shower curtain last time...reminds me to get it together with my birth things...I am a little too early to be using it yet. It was vinyl I think, totally waterproof and thick enough there was no swooshy sounds.

We didn't put anything on the bed until labor started.

we have something similar to this. Not exactly cheap, but we use it for more than just for the birth preparation period, KWIM? It's great for co-sleeping and just general protection, too. It might get a bit stained if you birth in the bed, but if it's just your water breaking, it prolly won't. Anyway, a few stains aren't a big deal, at least to me.

I know you all will think I was soooooo cheap, but I'm practical AND cheap....lol
I used the cheap plastic drop cloth you can buy at Home Depot for like $2.19 a roll. DH and I had just painted a few bedrooms when I went into labor, I had EVERYTHING but a mattress cover, so I remembered I had that roll of drop clothe stuff left. It worked great. I also labor in the birth tub and then get out for pushing. Don't remember if there was a swoosh sound or not. Shoot for 2 bucks try it and see, not loss if so.
Happy birthing!

I made a waterproof matress pad for dd's bed with PUL as the bottom layer and 2 layers of organic cotton french terry. It was expensive because of the cotton, but you could use cheaper fabric or just sew PUL into a fitted sheet.

I had the same problem w/ the crinkle noise driving me crazy. I wish I had known about these bedwetting products before my homebirths. When DS had problems w/ bedwetting I found these. I am using them for this birth though!!! DS would empty his whole bladder, before he woke up and these covers absorbed it all. I liked them so much I bought three, to have them handy in an accident, while the other was in the wash. You can buy them at places like Linens n' Things or Bed Bath and Beyond and even places like Wal-mart and K-mart, but here are links to what you should be looking for. They are generally advertised for bedwetting or bladder issues. So, when I've asked clerks they didn't know what I was talking about, until I said I had a child w/ bedwetting problems. They also sell those "blue pads that you find on the bed in hospitals when you arrive", but in a variety of sizes. I bought two of the big ones to cover my whole king size bed in case my water breaks, while I sleep(has happened before), so I don't have to change the whole bed. My bed has one of those really think mattresses that sheets won't fit on. But even if you don't have problems with your sheets not fitting or coming off. Pick up a pair or sheet suspenders(they sell them at the above stores and K-mart for about $5.00 or $6.00). Your sheets won't come iff again, no matter how much moving around you do! Here are some links, so you know what you are looking for. They look and feel like regular mattress pads, but on the other side there is a waterproof barrier. Some of these places even advertise them as "crunch free" waterproof mattress protectors. They range in price for bed size from about $15-$80 and depending on how "deluxe" you want to go. I prefer the ones that are middle grade and up. I learned the hard way only dry them on the delicate cyle so you don't melt the waterproof backing. They really are noiseless(no more crinkling) and comfortable. See if they have them at the above stores locally, so you can see for yourself which you prefer.

Here are links to the waterproof mattress pads and the absorbent overlay pads:
