I would see how much it would cost putting in engineered hardwood vs restoring the old stuff. My MIL has old hardwood and its all warped and looks like crap.

Hardwood. Its attractive, easy to keep clean, and throw rugs/oriental rugs look great on top of them in high traffic area's. I hate our one room downstairs that has carpeting. I vacuum it daily, and it just attracts all kinds of stuff. Plus, you have to deal with stains when you have kids. Hardwood looks great when you just vacuum it daily or even weekly. I love my hardwood!

I voted hardwood, but if you want carpet in some areas consider carpet tiles. www.flor.com sells the coolest array of colors and textures. There's no padding or glue so there isn't that offgassing to deal with. They're washable and when the tiles wear out the company will recycle your used carpet back into new carpet tiles.

I voted hardwood, but in reality, anything other than installed carpeting is great!

I voted hardwood.

Our last home was all carpeted and the home we live in now is all wood floors.
We have a dog and 1 messy child.
I never felt the carpet was ever really clean. It was harder to clean up spills or accidents. The dog actually damaged the carpet in one spot. My nose was constantly stuffy in that house.
With the wood floors I'm more confident that the floor is clean. The floor looks nice. The dog has not damaged the floor. Spills are easily cleaned up. It really isn't that cold or loud to me. I don't have a stuffy nose every day.

Hardwood and rugs. If you decide to change the color scheme in a room, it is a lot easier to change an area rug and carpet.

Hardwood!

I had never lived in a house with anything other than carpet and tile until the current house we have. It has the original 120 yo hardwood and it is AWESOME. It has been refinished many times over the years ad still looks great. We even have a lot of bird's eye maple. I thought it would be really cold. We cannot even have rugs as we have three cats that seem to love to puke on rugs. It gets very cold here but I still find the floor to be warm. We do always wear slippers and socks in the winter though. I cannot believe how much easier it is to keep clean!

Ok, so I think we'll refinish the hardwood. Dh wants to go with a natural carpet in the den - I'm not sure we could get the original wood floor matched in the den without spending a bunch of money. So, he thought we could experiment with wool carpet in there. I'm not completely sure, but it sounds better than synthetic carpetting. I do love the idea of natural fiber area rugs in the rooms where we want them.

Silly decorating question: If the house is all travertine tile or hardwood flooring, would it look silly for the den (which is accessable from the tiled kitchen or the wood floored living room) to be something like cork? For some reason, it seems like it'd look fine carpetted, and I don't want it tiled, but I'm not sure about what to do in that room. Ideas?

I think cork would be fine.

Hardwood all the way. Carpets are toxic and gross.
