CAFFINE and labor. A NO NO?

Or does it even matter?

I've heard/read talk about alcohol and labor, but not caffine.

I'm about to do a search on it but figured I'd ask here first.

It could speed the baby's heartrate and dehydrate mom. A little might be ok if one cup of tea or coffee would make you feel better in early labor.

I think it would be a bad idea, personally. I think I would just feel...weird.

That's what I was inclined to think too. I was mostly thinking TEA in labor...

Decaffinated probably.

As you've probably read in my popular previous thread about pain in birth, I obviously had a bad experience.

Soo...I'm trying to think of ways to make it easier on me...naturally

Tea or a glass of wine were some ways I was thinking to help me RELAX.

For me, when I drink tea, I am SO RELAXED it's ridiculous. That's one reason I want to give birth in the winter Nice warm tea during painful contractions will no doubt make me feel better, I'm thinking.

Mmm.

Decaffinated tea has little to no caffine though, right?

Or would it still be enough to dehydrate and speed heartrate?

Try an herbal blend with nettle and red raspberry leaf, with maybe some honey or sugar. See if you like that, it's benificial in labor (and pregnancy). Decaf shouldn't hurt anything but won't physically help either unless it's that big a mental trigger and soother for you.

My HB midwife recommends a little sugar and caffeine to help revitalize tired women in labor. I don't think she means going overboard and drinking an entire starbucks capuccino mocchachino latte grande frou frou drink though, LOL.

I had a great couple of cups of coffee with my OJ, french toast, eggs, bacon and hashbrowns with breakfast on my labor day and it was fabulous!! I did make sure my fluid intake was high and my salt intake was adequate for the rest of the day but that perfect breakfast with my dp was the just the thing for me!!

If i remember correctly my MW suggested a big breakfast and a cuppa somthing to perk me up to keep my attitude pumped for the long walks I had ahead of me! As with anything moderation and consultation with your body is best.

I had a cup of coffee during my last labour. It was around 4:30-5pm, while I was making dinner for my dks. I was tired, but contractions were coming in groups and then spacing out periodically (had been happening on and off since that morning), so I thought baby was arriving that night, but not for several hours. It tasted good, perked me up a bit at least mentally, and didn't seem to have any negative effect on the baby or the labour. She was born at 9:30 that evening.

In the middle of my labor, I wanted a coke!! By gone it, it had to be a coke! Nothing else would do. I got my coke, without any real ill effects on mama or baby.
