topical flouride application in dental office

My husband took our child to the dentist today and came home very disturbed at the dentist. Apparently the dentist applied, painted on, flouride without asking my husband first even though the dentist knew my husband didn't want flouride for our other child at a prior appointment.

Can this be removed? How? And if not, how long will this treatment stay on her teeth? These are her milk teeth and she had one tiny spot of decay on a molar.

My DS also had fluoride painted on his teeth at almost 3 yrs old. The dentist did it because he had had significant tooth decay between the front two teeth and almost lost both teeth.

Although I had not allowed it on my first child, I did allow it because of the significant problems with the front teeth. Also, it had taken a lot of discussion for the dentist to allow me in the room with my son and I felt that he had given about as much as he was going to. As my husband felt strongly about going to this dentist, I couldn't just say no and find another dentist, so I made the best choice I could.

What I did do was find out that it comes off when you brush their teeth. So, I said thank you and took my son to a nearby bathroom and brushed his teeth, making sure he spit and didn't swallow any of it.

Not a perfect solution, but given my circumstances, that was the best option.

Thanks. I am really not worried about it. She is almost 5 and doesn't have decay and we have always used non-flouride toothpaste and regular unflorinated water. So if she ingested some, although not ideal, I wasn't worried. I just didn't know how permanent it would be. I know the Dentist was doing what he felt was best for his patient.

I had her brush her teeth and spit. So its good to know its not that permanent. Thanks for letting me know.
