Vitamin K: Pros and Cons?

Our baby is due in a soon, and our midwife brought up the subject of vitamin K. Here in New Zealand the current reccomendation is that all babies recieve Vit K, either by injection or orally.

From what Ive read, unless you are in a 'high risk' group eg traumatic birth, prem or low birth weight, inadequate feeds etc, it seems to be unnessary.

What do all you ladies think? How many of you gave vitamin k after a home birth?

A good place to start looking for info is the Midwifery Archive.

We chose not to have Vit K given to our 2nd son after birth. We figured if there was extreme birth trauma we would though. I did it after my 1st son since his birth was much more difficult.

We did give the injection to my dd and she ended up with terrible jaundice. I read later that vit k can cause jaundice. With ds, our mw recommended waiting to decide until after the birth. There was no indication for needing the vit k so we didn't do it for him.

Thanks for your replies so far. Thanks for that great link UlrikeDG. It really confirmed what we we're thinking, just needed a second opinion I suppose.

another new zealander, yay! =)

the parent's centre webpage (a NZ organization) actually has good non-biased information on vit K for newborns...that's where i look up on it. we decided not to give it to our baby because 1) i firmly believe that if newborns really needed vit k, they would have it available to them naturally at birth and 2) there is a really, really slim change of your baby experiencing an emergency requiring this dosage.

i had a homebirth & told my midwife we were not interested, but i trusted her judgement so told her if something didn't feel right to her at the birth to go ahead with it. we had a homebirth w/ no complications, so it did not come up.

We don't give it.

Didn't give it to ds, I would only consider it if the baby had a birth injury (i.e. I knew a lady whose baby came so fast that she had a large hematoma on her head, in that case I would give it even though I know some people wouldn't)

I had a homebirth-turned-hospital-transfer for cesarean birth, and refused the Vit K for DS. The Drs didn't seem to think it was a big deal to not get it, even though he was probably in the "at risk" group, being a c/section. They just shrugged and said "OK".

Wow, where are you, gottaknit? Not in the US? Or are there states that don't enforce it? I'm in NY and it's MANDATORY if you're in a hospital. Nice, huh? That's actually part of the reason we decided to homebirth - mandatory antibiotic ointment in the eyes, and mandatory K shot.

After reading a lot of articles (& still want to read more) we decided we did not want to do the shot - in fact, our midwife is totally against the shot. Though she says if we want to go oral, fine with her. We'd decided that I'd just up my intake of Vitamin-K-rich herbal infusions in the last month to build up the supply in my/baby's blood (Susun Weed in Herbal for the Childbearing Year has some great suggestions) so that I wouldn't at all fret about missing the shot. BUT our issue now is, we realized that if for any reason we do need a hospital transfer - which of course I'm assuming & hoping we don't! - our baby would get the Vit K shot, because we couldn't refuse it here in NY (you get reported to CPS etc etc). So I have concerns about loading up my baby with an incredibly high dose shot of Vit K if his/her blood is already rich with the natural stuff.

Anyway, that's slightly OT. It's great to hear other mamas weigh in on the Vitamin K question - it's a kind of tricky issue. One midwife I met said she did know of one mama whose baby had a problem - so she herself (the midwife) elected to give her baby the shot at her own homebirth. You'll find stories on either end...

We did homeopathic vitamin K

Would you clarify, please, since I'm not very familiar with homeopathy - what's homepathic vitamin K? Where do you get it?

Here's a good article: http://www.withwoman.co.uk/contents/info/vitamink.html

Chantald, do you mean botanical Vit K or an actual homeopathic remedy? I only ask because some people use the terms herbs and homepatic interchangeably. If there is a homeopathic Vit K, I'd be interested to know more about it.

Ah - just found this: http://www.elixirs.com/products.cfm?productcode=HY158

I'm in Oregon. I don't think anything is "mandatory" here. I've never had any problems refusing any kind of medical procedure. It blows me away that a state government could force someone to take a drug/shot/treatment they don't want. :
