My first Wool Cover!

Yippee! I finally got the gall to cut into my wool jersey (eggplant color yum!). I dyed some FOE (1") with RIT. DYLON was my first and second try and it wouldn't take but RIT did.

I cut the 2 pieces of jersey and pinned them together.

Then I took the FOE and starting at the top sewed it on - stretching as much as possible at the top - legs and back.

Then I hammered on the snaps using the inexpensive snapsetter. WHat a PITA!!!! It took me over an hour

ANyways here's the finished results:

DS is waking up - I"ll let you know how it fits later

I'm just glad it looks decent!!!

Oh one more thing. What I don't like about it is the FOE kinda curls a bit at the top of the front of the dipe. If I had snapped through the FOE it would have been better - but these metal snaps won't go through that many layers (ask me, I know!)

Alison, it looks fabulous!

That looks great! I love the color, and the FOE looks very nice and finished.

I'm a little frustrated with my first attempt, but it's my first diaper cover ever, so I'm trying to persevere. It's a little hard, too, since my baby isn't born yet, so I can't try it on to see if it fits. I sewed 1/4 inch elastic onto the seam allowance before I turned it right side out, and it doesn't seem very stretchy or effective. I'll keep working on it. I hope I can get some to turn out as cute as yours!

Well, Panda, FOE made it really really easy! no turning and topstitching since the FOE binds it - and then you just stretch (reall hard) where you want elastic. If you pm me I can tell you about my co-op. Not sure if she's selling it now, but she usually is.

Also - if you like the design you're working on and want to keep trying that way - 3/8" is much better than 1/4" for getting the proper stretch. Course you're working on a newborn diaper cover, but still may want to try the thicker stuff. It really stretches better!

good job & he looks adorable in it!

That is really cute (as is your little guy). Did you use a pattern or make your own from a cover you already had? I've been thinking it would be neat to try that but I'm a really bad seamstress and definitely need a pattern.

Well I had a pattern - still do actually - the new conceptions (they also make poo pockets) quick snap cover pattern from the diaper cover deluxe pattern. I didn't like that style. I tried it with windpro and it was too tight at the legs and kind of balloney. It could have been how I made it but I just wasn't a fan of how it looked and worked (the style is very simalr to ME airflow covers. So I ended up using a cover i had and stretching it out with dh's help and tracing around it onto poster board. Then I cut that out and traced my pieces - and then just sewed on the FOE and then applied the snaps. Very easy.

It looks great!! Where did you get the wool from? lovely color!

FWIW, a dye guru told me that RIT is the BEST thing for nylon FOE. Unfortunately, the poly and spandex in it won't take the dye, which is why you get stripes, but that could look cool (they way you used it) and sometimes it doesn't even show. It was nice to know that RIT is acutally really good for something

Thanks. Yes it is nice to know that the only easily available dye at local stores can actually be used for something : LOL. I did try dylon btw and it wouldn't take at all for some reason.

I did chose the stripey side to show the FOE - I thought that looked cool too

Unfortuantely, I got the wool jersey at fabric.com and they don't offer it at the moment. I did just order some merino wool from them to make a flannel wool cover. There are lots of nice colors.

Is wool jersey stretchy? I'm using merino, and I wonder how they're different. My merino didn't felt up very dramatically. I hope it will be thick enough in a 2 layer cover.

I'm putting my first cover on hold while I try a different pattern. So far it's working out better. Your success is an inspiration!

yup the jersey is very stretchy. I think you just may want to make sure there's enough fabric for the cover, and then stretch stretch stretch your elastic or FOE>

Let us know how it turns out~
