Going pee during class time means losing 5 min of recess? - Page 2

My first grade teacher had that rule, but our breaks were less frequent and there was always a line for the toilet. I remember being ridiculed for wetting my pants several times because I didn't get the chance to go and was too scared of punishment to go during class.

No one ever asked me why I was wetting my pants though....

I have also found that often-times the teachers aren't aware of exactly what is in a child's 504 plan or IEP so it might be a good idea to touch base with her and remind her that your daughter can go to the restroom whenever she needs to. Kind of head it off before it becomes an issue.

What grade is this btw?
The teacher was in the 3 hour meeting for the 504 and is well aware of what's in it. This is a split 1st/2nd class.

I wondered about that, the teacher apologized for the smell in the class. She said another student was sent home for pooping there pants that day and thats why it smelled. I couldn't smell anything thanks to my cold. I'm wondering if the kid pooped there pants becasue they didn't want to miss recess.

Good - now she doesn't have an excuse to fail to live up to the modifications set forth in the 504!

I could see my ds intentionally holding his urine/bowels just so he wouldn't miss any recess time. Recess is a huge deal for him and he looks forward to it daily. This is a horrible class rule and should be changed.

Hugs,

I don't know about you but for us potty training was all about not having any shame in doing something natural, for a teacher to undo that is awful.

Let us know how you get on.

I live in Sacramento CA, and we recently had a Junior Highs Student that was told to pee in his soda bottle. He did- in the back of the classroom. Teachers have some pretty powerful intimidation ability, and they are really (IMO) abusing their power in some situations.

Talk to the teacher, the principal, and the distric sipervisor, and the school board... Talk until this is resolved and doesn't happen anymore.
I grew up in Manteca. Not far from Sacramento. In every school I ever attended there was a similar rule. If you went to the bathroom during class you had to stay in or sit on the bench during recess. It is not shocking to me unfortunately.

However if there was such a policy at a school my child went to you could BET they would be hearing from me. I already told Dd;s teacher yesterday in no uncertain terms she is NOT TO STAY IN AT RECESS because she has not completed her work.

I just don't get this anyway. it's not like they are preparing you for work or something. Employers don't dock your pay for not peeing during your scheduled breaks.

Hrm.. Well I just had a talk with Dd. She said they are not allowed to go during math. I told her if she ever has to go to the bathroom and the teacher tells her no to just get up and go. She is to tell him her mom said she can go and he can call me to discuss it.

You know.. apparently men don't realize that if women hold it in for too long it HURTS! I know my DH was not aware of this until I had to scream at him to pull over once. (Just wait to we get home. I don't want to stop blah blah blah. : )

Ditto, that is not right and I would be up there in a heartbeat.:

Yeah, I assume that's the point; ie. kids who ask to go every hour and then spend 5-10 mins out of class. But, individually? W/no prior "misbehaviors," etc? That's punitive.

You could ask her teacher to take the class on b'rm breaks in the am and pm. That's what our classes do;ie. it's obviously too long to go from 8:50-12:15 w/o the bathroom.

AND, regardless, if the 504 says she can go then she CAN go.

I would be talking to the teacher too! How can you punish a child for needing to use the restroom? That is ridiculous!:
Man that is absurd. My dd is prone to UTI's so that rule would in no way be acceptable to me because she is such a rule abiding girl that she would follow it if it killed her. She's making the kids who don't abuse that basic right pay for the ones who are. That is not fair or healthy. That is probably something I'd almost switch teachers for because who knows what other unreasonable rules she has. wow.

I would probably request to have a meeting with the teacher and maybe even the principal at the same time regarding that. A child should not be punished for having to go to the bathroom. If your child is abusing bathroom privileges which I'm sure a lot of children probably would try to do that, then she needs to bring that issue up with you. But if they are just simply needing to go relieve themself after an hour or two of not going to the potty then they should not be punished. :

When I was in fourth grade we could only go to the bathroom at 11AM, and 2:00 pm and the was a school for special needs kids. The teacher took delight when a student would wet the pants and put them on display in front of the whole class.

Last year, Maddie had come home with poop in her panties. I asked what happened and she said said had a little diarreha and had to ask to go to the bathroom 10 minutes after the bathroom break. Her teacher said they just went so she would have to pull a nickel (equal to writing name on the board) so Maddie didn't want to get in trouble so she tried to hold it.

As soon as we got home she went in the shower and I promptly called the school. She was still there so I asked what happened. She said that the kids were taking advantage of bathroom breaks and not using them wisely. I said,"well, maddie is in the shower right now washing $h!t off herself because she was afraid to get in trouble. I said my child will NOT be punished for having to use the bathroom, period.

That's horrible. And good for you for calling and letting them know about it. I wouldn't have let it go by without telling the teacher how I felt as well as the school administrator.

This is happening to another friend's 5 yr old KINDERGARTENER. They earn money (somehow?) for holding it and only going to the bathroom twice a day or something? They lose the $ and 5 min of recess for going. My friend is understandably furious about it and intends to talk to the teacher AND the principal.
