Shoot down this idea!

The Hub has gotten interested in the qualities of various fabrics since I started making diapers, and seems to have had a pretty cool idea. However, if this idea is REALLY cool, why hasn't someone done it already? So, your job is to shoot holes in this fabric combo!

He's been trying to talk me into taking up quilting (because ... I need something to fill time?: NOT! ). Cub has some Polartec blankets that are marvelously warm, and this made him think "why not use it for quilt batting?" It wouldn't ball up, it would last for ages, you could use heavyweight Windpro with maybe a nice heavy flannel under, the top could be anything.

So, tell me why this is NOT a swell idea? Besides the fact that I'm not going to have time to try it out anytime soon!

Namaste,

Pallas

Well, the only thing I can think is to make a good size quilt you'd have to use two "rows" of windpro b/c it doesn't come in widths wide enough to use for batting. And to do that you are looking at some serious $$$ even if you buy a whole roll from MM it's 7-9.00 a yard with a tax id and wholesale acct. with them otherwise it's 10.00 a yard (one roll averages at 300.00 or more)

I think it's a great idea.

One of the ladies i took my quilting class with used fleece to back a quilt (ie instead of both batting and a backing) and it was just sooo warm and inviting. She didnt use MM, just a decent fleece that didnt pill.

Wow-- that was quick! Thanks!

I've got a big chunk of a 300wt roll left, and this might be just what to do with it ... now to teach myself to quilt ...

I've made a few "quilts"using those heavy polarfleece blankets as a backing. You know the ones that are sold in Twin, Double, Queen, etc.? They are nice and wide and then the quilts are fully reversible. I still use a batting material, but the polarfleece is nice.

Yup, I think the only drawback would be the expense.

But then if you would do a good batting and quilt shop fabric for backing anyway, I guess the cost issue would be a wash if you eliminate the fabric.
