steroid shots for baby's lungs and breast engorgement

I have a question for you (x-posted all over) who had steroid shots to encourage development of your preterm babies lungs BEFORE they were born (if you knew preterm labour was likely).

Did you notice this had any effect on your breast tissue?

A friend of mind is 30 weeks pregnant, nearly fully effaced and the docs gave her her second steroid shot to encourage the baby's lung development on Friday. She called me today saying she's noticing a lot of milk production, tender breasts and what almost feels like blocked ducts. She is a woman of colour and says that women of Latino and African decent often have very fibrous breast to begin with and she is worried about all of this.

??? Anyone? I've never dealt with any of this before.

I had the betamethasone shots for three of my four babes, and never experienced any symptoms like that with my breasts with any of them.

I had steroid shots for my youngest. The shots did nothing for my milk production! Sadly I never quite had enough for my daughter So I'm inclined to there is little if any correlation between steroid shots and milk production?

I had 3 rounds (6 total shots) of steroids and never noticed any breast changes.

The steroid shots didnt do that to me, but the Reglan they gave me for the nasua the shots gave me, messed with my breasts.

I've suggested no bra (she's wearing underwire) and cabbage leaves...and continue to be a supportive person to her as she has been ordered on bedrest.

I had them with both of my preemie kiddos and didn't notice any changes.

I've done the round of shots twice for both of my premature births and didn't notice any changes. The first time I had them about a month before I delivered and the second time it was just a few days before delivery.

I had two shots of it and never had that happen to me either...

I had shots with my preemie 12 hours before she was born. I didn't see any specific breast changes at that time. Maybe coincidence? (My milk never really "came in" in a normal manner, so I may not know what I'm talking about! )

I got them as well and I didn't notice any breast changes. My legs and ankles, OTOH, looked like an elephant's

Thanks everyone. It seems like this was just her body getting ready. Baby is still inside, YAY...and cabbage leaves have soothed her engorged breast tissue.

i had two rounds, one probably at 23 weeks, and another probably at 25 weeks, and i definately DID notice breast engorgement... though i was also on betamethasone, so that might have had something to do with it. i have always assumed it was the steroids, though.

fwiw, i had a great milk supply while ds (26 weeker) was in the nicu and a little baby. not so great anymore now that he's a big guy, but that's okay.

hope your friend's baby stays put!
