Any Tips on prepping a 2.5 y.o for G.A dental surgery?

Hi. My dd is scheduled for dental surgery under G.A on Thurs.She is 2.5 and still nurses avidly...multiple times a day and during the night a few times...She's never not nursed first thing in the a.m...How did people deal w/ N.PO prior to visit?Does anyone have any tips on what I might say @ actual surgery& importance of not nursing at min. a few hours -4-in advance...Some say just put her in the car seat-when she's asleep..that's not gonna happen-she'll definately wake up-and we have @1.5 hour/s of travel time min.

I have read other posts in this forum re:Ex. w/ G.A & I took comfort in reading people's accounts...
I'm worried that Any Deviation from usual pretty laid back routine will freak her out...so some sort of heads up is probably prudent but I don't want to keep her up the night before worried @ seeing the dentist again.

So any advice would be appreciated..

Can't help much and am hoping you get some good answers. DD's (2.5) G.A. is scheduled Friday morning. The anesthesiologist said she needed to be NPO for breastmilk for four hours before the surgery, which is at least better than 8. I still don't have any idea how she is going to tolerate this. I am just assuming none of us are going to get much sleep, and hope maybe for a nap later in the day. Good luck to you guys and if you get a chance post how it went, cause ours is the next day and I'm nervous as heck

We had DP get up with DD the morning she had to not nurse for the Dr.

She did better than I ever expected.

I'm leaning toward telling dd. that she is going back to the dentist to get her teeth fixed but that it will not hurt her as she will be asleep.I will also tell her that she cannot nurse or eat that morning before the dentist becuz ie. you can't eat before this type of test...I haven't gotten all of the particulars sorted out but I'm thinking she will prob. understand some of what I am saying ..I'm figuring I'll start talking @ Thurs. appoint. tommorrow-Tues.-so we can process - any ? she may have @ things...
Thing is when she wakes up two of her front teeth may be missing..this isn't something I'm gonna put out there cuz it may not happen...
I'm thinking how I present things to her is the key factor here....matter of calm fact -so my exterior doesn't nec. have to reflect my interior ykwim?! HA!!! Wish me luck w/ that!

This is what I would tell my son if it were me, I would tell him the night prior. He gets anxious and over thinking leads to him being more anxious.
In a not worried tone I would say:
We will be going to the dentist tomorrow.
He will be giving you some medicine that will make you tired and then they are going to clean your teeth and make them healthy.

I guess whatever question she has be truthful but dont over explain.

Erin,great advice @ keeping it simple & truthful.

Do you or other/s know any simple way to try to get her to understand the "no nursing" before "cleaning" rationale becuz in her mind you can eat before brushing teeth etc..but not afterward.
Basically I'm looking for a simple way in concert w/ toddler logic to explain the no eating or drinking rule..
Gee I feel so long-winded trying to get my points across-
& I do think I would overexplain this one....
Ughhhhh-I can't wait til Thurs. has come & gone w/ my precious one sitting "KOZY" her favorite past-time w/ me.I am so anxious @ her surgery.

I do not think there is anything you can really tell her that will make it "ok" not to nurse with her. I know my son would freak about that.
I would try to make bed time as late as possible the night before.
Then she will be able to nurse and hopefully after she wakes up maybe go for a walk outside. Then head off. I dont see what time your appt is, so this is just my best guess that you are leaving around 9-10am.
Just try not to focus too much on it too much and let her know she will nurse soon.

B C=well dd and I didn't sleep well last night she kept reminding me that she would be "sleeping "at the dentists...lol..

Things went so much smoother than I ever expected-dd nursed for last time@ 5:00a.m before surgery -She was officially up at 7:00 and although she did plead to nurse she understood that I knew she wanted to and it was hard to wait but she could do it-and did it she did-First time for everything-she was a real trooper .I went into OR w/ her to hold her ,kiss her head before she was out -It was terrifying for me to watch her go under but DR. let me know what to expect.She was in surgery @ 2 hours.was disoriented and vomited several times in recovery room -totally par for the course w/ G. but never par anything when it's your child.It's hard.
dd 's been in good spirits as usual-she hasn't been able to sleep this afternoon prob. restless.but she and we are doing soooo much better.

Forgot to ask what she got done?

dd. had top four teeth extracted : and one baby rootcanal & cap on rt. upper side.
She started cutting teeth @ 3mo. has a full set-poor enamel etc. caused upper teeth to chip they have had decay for some time despite meticulous dental hygeine & good nutrition.
Ped actually recommended I wait 4 tmt.but as soon as I was confident she would let anyone else near her mouth I sought tmt.
Very agonizing choice -difficult consequence to live w/

What kind of cap did they use?
I am glad I have been here to support you. I know this dental stuff is NO FUN for our kiddos.: I just wish these cavity bugs would leave our kiddos alone.
