VBAC question

Thread Starter
Hi, ladies. I generally post over in homebirth because I'm looking into one for myself when we have our second, but I've got a question for a friend.

She recently have fibroids removed (maybe 9 months or so ago) from her uterus. She is currently pregnant with her first biological child and would like to consider a having a vaginal birth. Her current doctor has refused to do one because she just doesn't do them. She's curious as to why her doctor may have refused and what some good facts are to back her having what would essentially amount to a VBAC. She's also wondering if her doctor continues to refuse, should she look for a new doctor or just accept that she may not be a good candidate?

Thank you so much!

It honestly depends on how they do the fibroids surgery. If they did it in a classical c/s style, her rupture rate goes up and it's going to be awfully hard for her to find anyone who will attend her. If they did it in a more "bikini" cut style it's going to be much easier.

Her best bet would be for her to get her surgical records ASAP and read through them to see what they say and then go from there.

Second (or third or fourth) opinion

Yes, if your friend had a transverse incision, she should be a good candidate for a VBAC. Definetely, as pp said, get her medical records, and find a care provider known for truly supporting vbacs, not just saying they do. Obviously who she's with now is not supportive of any vbacs, so frankly her medical opinion doesn't count.

She might find some useful information at www.ican-online.org . I would definitely at least get a second opinion, once she has her surgical records in hand. Best wishes to her!

I second ICAN.
If her doctor just doesn't do VBAC's, then that is not a good indication that she would not be a good candidate, since they automatically tell everyone no for a VBAC. I don't know how having a prior c-section and then fibroid surgery may complicate the situation (like the PP said, depends on the incision type).
She should get her medical records, contact ICAN for a list of good vbac care providers in her area, and start doing some interviews/consultations.

ETA: wait, has she had a c-section before, or just the fibroid surgery???
