Arg! Dairy is in everything!!

We've been dairy-free (round 2!) since mid-May. There were the occasional slip ups in the first few weeks, as I was still getting used to reading labels and remembering not to eat off of DP's plate... Well we moved a month ago. I needed to read labels again and somehow missed that the local bakery puts dried milk in its whole wheat bread!! : DD1 and I ate an entire loaf btwn the two of us within the first week here and I just found out yesterday. NO WONDER we've had such horrible eczema issues for the past month. I feel so bad for her. I attributed the night-waking and the behavior to moving, but I couldn't figure out the resurgence of the eczema. Oy. Well, at least now I know.

I do most of my own cooking and baking. For packaged breads, look for kosher symbols. If something has just the kosher symbol, it's pareve (neutral, neither meat nor dairy.) If there's a "D" or the word "dairy" next to the kosher symbol, then the item may contain milk products (or it might have just been cooked in the same facility as dairy products but not kashered in between.) Regular bread (not cinnamon rolls or other "fancy" breads) has to be pareve to be kosher at all.

Trader Joe's breads are all dairy-free. Is there a TJs near you?

nope, closest tj's is a 5hr drive (5 min from my old house, though ).

I've been buying bread from a farmer's wife at the farmer's market, except for that first week when i needed to go to the store and stock our pantry. i bought a local bakery's bread at the co-op - all their other breads were DF; just not the w.w. bread. *shrug. At least I've solved THAT mystery... Since DD1 is also allergic to garlic (talk about in EVERYTHING!!), turmeric, poppy seeds and some beans, (oh and we're mostly vegetarian) I cook about 98% from scratch. I do buy bread, though I used to make a loaf every few days (prior to dd2's arrival ). Oh and I buy pre-made gnocchi , pastas, and tortillas (all DF), otherwise it's all made with my own two hands. once i got used to it, i like it a lot, but it was a little overwhelming at first (so much pre-planning!).

Be careful with the hamburger and hotdog buns. White flour so I don't buy it much but I have occasionally and TJ's does have milk in them.

This is why I mostly stay away from bread.

But, Aunt Millie's whole wheat loaves have no milk in them. See if a store around you carries that brand. They even have organic loaves. And, they're yummy, IMO.

Aunt Millies had HFCS in it, last time I checked... Also, I prefer to buy local whenever possible. I was just irked that this bakery with fabulously yummy, hand-made, natural bread had powdered milk a) at all; b) ONLY in the whole wheat loaves. Of course the one time I didn't read the label, there's milk...

Rudy's Organic

Is dairy free. They have lots of yummy flavors. Locally, they have them at Whole Foods/Wild Oats and they even carry it at Costco.

Organic does not have HFCS in it. There's no such thing as organic HFCS. It uses date juice or something like that.

Regular Aunt Millie's does have HFCS, IIRC. Organic, shouldn't, I agree, but I've never checked AM's organic bread labels, so I can't say for sure. I mean, I would hope that if they're calling themselves organic, there isn't. But, unless they are *certified* organic, they can call themselves whatever they want and put whatever they want in their product.

Regardless, I don't have a TJ or a WF or Wild Oats or anything like that around here. I was at the local co-op, where I was surprised to find a nice, hand-made, artisian loaf of whole wheat bread had powdered milk in it (especially when all the other varieties from that same bakery did not). I was just venting.

I feel the same about soy. All the breads without HFCS have soy in them. At this point, I either make my own (God bless whoever invented the bread machine!) or resign myself to the fact that she'll have HFCS.

Vent away. I feel the same way. It is sooooo frustrating. I think apart from maybe corn allergy, a milk allergy is the most prolific food in the craziest things.

For months I was using Better than Bulliuon. Then I read the label and discovered whey powder. Man, was I irritated. And once I gave him a piece of salami taste test in the store. Three aisles later he was puking up his guts. Arghhhh!

i todally understand...

ds is dairy intolerant and we're pretty good at making our own food, but forget about eating at most of our families houses. i guess if you dont have to read labels as due course then you probably miss more. ah well.

if you have allergies to milk, can you try othe milk types like soy milk?
