Ds 34 months is having dental work done this week via IV sedation.... is still bf at night 2-3 times....they said nothing by mouth after midnight...the night before the procedure....how important is it that he has nothing on his belly before they sedate him? They said he will get sick if he has anything on his belly....i'm trying to figure out why he can not bf...of course i would not tell them he bf if he did..kwim? Bm is easily digested so really he wouldn't have anything on his belly if he nursed once after 12 right? or should i not nurse him like they stated?

Breastmilk is considered a "clear fluid" as far as anesthesia is concerned. I think it clears the stomach completely in about 3-4 hours? Kellymom might have more detailed information about this.
What time will the dental procedure be?
If it's truly necessary to have him NPO for 8 hours before the surgury, it might actually be easier to have him fast during the daytime when everybody's up anyway, rather than overnight when he's used to nursing while you both sleep. Most people who schedual surgury just assume that everybody fasts overnight anyway and a morning appt just means "missing breakfast" and is easier on everybody.

Like ruthla said bm is digested in 3-4 hours. When ds was supposed to go in for IV sedation for dental work the dentist said at first nothing after midnight but when I told him that wasnt possible he said that 3 hours was just as good
: why he didnt just say 3 hours in the begining I will never know. Of course he also fed me that load of BS about me still bfing was causing ds's teeth problems.

When my son had GA at 8am they told me nothing after 12am but he could have clear fluids until 3am, 5 hours before. And he had water at exactly 3am, and was fine.
