Dental advice RE: 4.5yo lost tooth, needs spacer?

So one of my boys had a loose tooth recently -- presumably from roughhousing with his twin brother. Dh took him to a pediatric dentist who said that if it comes out he needs a "spacer" to make sure his adult tooth comes in straight. The spacer is $250. Today the tooth fell out. My feeling is, I don't want to spend $250 because even if that particular tooth comes in straight, there's no guarantee he won't eventually need braces. Thoughts from BTDT mamas?

Btw, he is SO CUTE with a little space in his mouth

What is involved with getting a spacer? I would probably be more concerned about a little kid having dental work than the money aspect (not to discount the cost though...)

I really don't think I would have it done. I have one tooth on the bottom that is a little crooked. My sister needed braces big time. I just don't know that you can say for sure something will or will not make a kids teeth crooked, so I would save the heart ache for the kid and leave it be.

My DD1 has been missing her front two teeth since she was 3y. We opted not to get a partial for her, they do break easier in DC, our pedi dentist does not suggest them for baby teeth.

Okay I have been reading online and it says they're usually not necessary in the front teeth (this tooth is just next to his front 2 teeth) so I think we're not going to get it.

All I have heard is that the very back molars are the ones that "position" the teeth to some extent. That you should never get them pulled etc.
If it were me I would leave it be and maybe get a small ruler and "watch" it to make sure the other teeth dont start crowding that area.
I would do anything to keep my son that is 5 out of the dentist chair, its really not fun for him.
