Living where and how I do, i don't really have this problem. I do like the answer "Because I can."

We don't get questioned much at all - Santa Cruz is very homeschool friendly! I like "it's what works for us" as a generic answer, but when my brother asked me I said "because I want my kids to think for themselves - to learn how to think rather than what to think!"

We love learning together. Government school is way too rigid for our family.

I usually say "Because we can." If people want to get more involved, I say that I don't want my kids to lose their natural curiosity and zest for learning; I want them to learn because they love it, not because someone says they have to.

There are plenty of other reasons but that's usually enough.

When I used to H/S that's what I would say. If the person kept hounding me for specifics then I would share more definite reasons for our choices, which were many different reasons at that time.

I always thought it was funny because the 2nd question out of someone's mouth was almost always "how can you teach them if you aren't a teacher/educated?" I would get that question almost every single time. I got so sick of hearing it. How could I NOT teach elementary education?

I get this one a lot from strangers. It's all I can do not to laugh.

I do occasionally respond with "Why do you ask?" but only if I'm feeling patient.
