I just realized that ds has an abcessed tooth. I am taking him in tomorrow to get it pulled.

We had extensive dental work done 6 months ago: 4 front teeth pulled, 4 caps (1 in each quadrant), and multiple composite fillings. We used in office GA.

I just noticed yesterday that there was a red blister on his gum above one of his capped teeth. : : It hurts him horribly, too.

He is absolutely terrified of the dentist (due to a very traumatizing experience with a previous dentist who we never went back to). He has been sobbing and sobbing about not wanting to go tomorrow. Because of the urgency and short notice, we won't have access to the anesthesiologist, so our only options are (of course) local anesthetic and nitrous oxide. I really hope the nitrous does the trick, otherwise I am going to have to physically hold him down. : : At least it will be a very quick procedure: a simple, quick extraction. I've had those done, and it really is just a few seconds long.

I'm trying to stop crying about it myself, so that I can find the strength to be calm and relaxed tomorrow, so at least ds won't see me loosing it. I don't know how that will happen.

So, tomorrow, if anyone wants to send us some healing thoughts, it would be much appreciated.

I feel for you, I had a niece who had to go through a lot of dental work also at a young age, it's just so heart breaking, you just wish you could take their place and make the pain go away. I will be thinking of you both!

Oh your poor son!! He sounds like my 5 year old son. He was just recently has a bad dentist visit as well and now is scared of the dentist. If he can wear the mask without freaking out (like my son ) it does work. Maybe talk to him about it and tell him it will help him.

I have heard about capped teeth getting abscess' in them.
I am worried about this as my son may need a cap on his first molar.
I hate the feeling I will have to watch it all the time and worry about this problem until it falls out.

Please keep updated and I will be sending HUGE positive & healing vibes both your way as I know how hard this is on mama as well.

I had 2 teeth pulled as a child with just a local. Never felt a thing and recovry was so easy.

Now if it was just that easy as an adult.

Dr. Yip (in Portland) did ds's dental work, and we were very happy with him. I have thought about seeing Dr. Pike in the future, simply because I have heard lots of great things about him. But, tomorrow, I think we will just got to Dr. Yip, as they know him and me (and my crazy ways : ) already.

Capps suck. But, I felt like it was better than him losing 4 (baby) molars. : :

Yes, sorry, it is West Linn. I have a tendency to call everything in the surrounding Portland area 'Portland'. It's all about an hour from me.

i am so sorry

i had 3 of my kids get abcesses and teeth pulled when they were little. i understand how heartbreaking it is as a mommy.

my one son had a hard time because the dentist was a jerk. the next dentist was much better and that really really helped.

the good news is, we had years of troubled teeth but so far, so good - no major dental work for the last few years.

update

It went much better than I could have possibly imagined.

Ds cried off and on during most of the drive (an hour away), and when we pulled into the parking lot, he really freaked out. We were early, so had to wait a while (not a good thing). He cried most of the half-an-hour wait, but started calming down near the end. Once we went back in the office, he was whimpering, tightly clutching my neck, and soon began crying. The dentist just started talking to him, used some dolls with teeth, asked to count his fingers, and slowly worked up to his looking at his teeth...and he didn't cry. He let the dentist take a peek in his mouth, which is HUGE!

I am so NOT a fan of bribing (like giving rewards after a "good" job), but I let them do such, mainly because it seemed to keep him happier and I knew we had to get this tooth looked at. By the end of the quick exam, we decided to go "practice taking pictures of his teeth". My mom was holding him and he happily opened up and bit down on the xray thing (what is it called?), and it soon became apparent that we could probably really get some xrays with him happy about it. We got 2 xrays!! My mom held him, and has was totally content about it.

Anyways, it turns out that the xrays show NO infection or anything. Yay!!! The dentist said the inflammation/swelling on the gum could be the very beginning of an infection, or it could be something else that will just heal up on its own. Yay!!!

Of course, he gave me a 'script for abx, but I told him I wouldn't fill it unless it becomes apparent he has a systemic infection or if the gum starts looking way worse (which I highly doubt).

We go back in a month, just to make sure all is well, and to give ds another good experience at the dentist.

Seriously, I feel like today was a miracle, I am still in awe.

While my dentist isn't a holistic dentist, I return to him because he is respectful of me and (more importantly) ds, and gentle. Oh, and of course, that he knows we nurse still and has NEVER even mentioned anything about it.
