Was your dc ever interested in jigsaw puzzles? If so, when did dc become interested in them and what age could dc put together a 25 piece + jigsaw puzzle alone?

Just curious.

My DS goes through phases of really liking puzzles. I think by his third Christmas (so, 2 and four months), he could do the large floor puzzles that are about 25 pieces. Now he's up to 60+. I love puzzles, so that's one activity I"m always happy to help with.

My oldest (who is 9) loves puzzles. She started doing jigsaws at maybe 2.5? I remember she used to put them together upside down too, with the plain cardboard part up instead of the picture. That was kind of freaky!

My middle child could care less about puzzles and never did them. My 3 yo loves them and does jigsaw puzzles now. I don't know when he started, I think between 2.5 and 3. He has a 24 piece and a 30 piece and he also likes to help when DD and I do regular puzzles.

DD's preschool teachers said that kids who like puzzles are usually good in math. And she has been doing really well in math so far (she's in 4th grade now).

DS (3 in November) has just graduated from the Peg puzzles to wooden puzzles with more pieces (8-12) He just was too impatient to sit and do them. Now he loves them and is catching on quickly. I predict he'll be up to 25 pieces by spring. Seriously, some kids just pick up different skills at different times. I knew an 18 month old who was doing 12 pieces.

That was my daughter, She was able to do jigsaw puzzles of 10-15 pieces by the gae of 18 months. She's 4 now and can do 100 peice one and is amazing at tanagrams and that type thing.
Kids all seem to develop these skills at different paces.

By 22 months my son was doing 20-25 piece puzzles, those giant pieces. He was *really* good and fast at puzzles, and would spend a long time putting together one after another ! But he's leveled out since then and now at 4.5 he'll work on those 60-piece Ravensburger puzzles, but needs a little help (or at least supportive company)

Actually from that I learned, just 'cause your kid does something really early, doesn't necessarily mean they are "gifted" - he was just concentrating on that at that particular time, and the vast majority of the time it all evens out.

Puzzles are great though, it's one of my favorite things to do with my son. It's nice to chat about life while doing a puzzle together.

Our ds has never really been interested in puzzles. He's 6 and can now do a 30-40 piece puzzle with a bit of help, but he just doesn't have the persistence to do it (unless we're in church and are doing it together as a quiet activity).

Dd on the other hand goes through phases where she loves puzzles. She could do a 25 piece puzzle by 2 1/2, and a 40 piece by 3. I haven't tried larger ones because we don't really have the space, and they seem to go from 40 pieces to 100+ with really little pieces, and I just KNOW some of those will get lost.

So, it all depends on the kid.

My DS goes through stages of really enjoying puzzles and then won't touch them for 6 months. Simple shape matching puzzles by 1.5-2 yo, 6-8 pieces by 2.5yo. He is 4 now and does 12-25 piece puzzles on his own and likes doing a 100 piece puzzle with a little help.

Hi SJ!

Christopher always loved jigsaw puzzles. I know he was older than 2, maybe 2.5, when he really discovered the 25 piece ones. He became obsessed with them very quickly. We have some 35-40 piece floor puzzles too that he loved around that age- he still loves them. I remember him finishing his older brother's 100 piece puzzles before he was 3. Around 3.5 he was doing 100 piece puzzles. I haven't bought more than 100 piece puzzles because I know they would take longer and I don't want the little pieces all over the place. I will say, some are harder than others, some he can put together very quickly and then others take him a week of chipping away at it here and there.
