Inadvertent peeing while pooping

DS doesn't like to sit on the potty ring as he's a big boy now. I'm fine with this... except when he's pooping and he inadvertently pees while bearing down. I keep telling him to point down but he either forgets or needs both his hands to hold the toilet seat to bear down. And if I get him to open his legs wider and lean forward, he starts to slide into the toilet bowl...

When I come in to help him wipe, there's pee everywhere! On the walls, on the shower curtain, on the floor mat... one time he even fired into the tub!

What can I do?? Please tell me I'm not the only one with this problem!

I just remind DS every single time that he needs to point his penis down when sitting on the toilet. Maybe your DS can help clean up? Will he still use the toilet ring at all? That would free up his hands.

I guess I'd present it to him as a problem - e.g. when you don't point down we get pee all over the room. Do you want to use your toilet ring so you can use a hand to point your penis down or would you rather clean up the pee-pee afterwards. Then I'd cross my fingers and hope he'd choose the ring.....

Can he hold his legs together when he sits? He'll hang into the toilet a bit, but hopefully won't touch the water.

I got a giggle out of all the things he nails.

My ds sat w/ knees together and it automatically pointed his penis down. Then he was free to grab the sides and not fall.

Oh yeah, we had this problem FOREVER. (Sorry) I just would ALWAYS remind him, when he told me that he was headed to the potty, to point down. I still remind him when it looks like he's not going to do it himself. I like a pp suggestion of offering him choices...that seems like the way to go. If he's not going to point down, then he needs to help clean up.

ps. my DS is the SAME age as yours!

For a long time I gave my son a simple cloth diaper to hold on his lap while he was pooping. He knew to kind of jam it in there before the poop came out. He has just recently given it up. I think this system saved me a LOT of cleaning up!

we have DS take his pants totally off (since we EC'd they were usually off anyway, he spent a lot of time nakey). then he straddles the potty with his legs wide - that way he sits further back and can lean forward to hold on, and his penis is already pointing down. HTH!

I just wanted to say THANKS for all your suggestions!

The winning one was putting a cloth diaper on his lap. Saved a huge mess today! Thanks P-Chan.

We did try the other suggestions: sit with legs closed (he almost fell in - he didn't have a wide enough base to keep him steady) and straddling the toilet (he couldn't get the right position to comfortably bear down).

Anyway - thanks again.

Oops! Poor guy! I wasn't sure how little he was (my boy has always been big). Glad the diaper worked out well!

I am coming late to this thread, but I am glad you found a solution. We had this problem one or two times and ended up spending months of reminding him to tuck his penis down whenever he sat on the potty. Luckily, we haven't had an issue now in quite awhile!

Mother had me tuck a towel between my legs on top of my penis to force it down. Worked. I was a toilet reader even then, and it left my hands free.

Sounds like you've found a solution, but another would be to have him pee standing up before he sits down to poop.

That's what ds does, takes off undies and pants and both legs go to the side, feels very secure that way!

We have the opposite problem...DS pooped while trying to pee standing up and is fully traumatized. I don't know what to do! He loves the concept of peeing standing up but he's so afraid "the poop is going to shoot out my bum again" that he won't do it. Now he won't use the potty at all...and we were so close
