beginning to understand

I am getting the feeling that this issues is just in the beginning stages of being fully understood. I check out all of the websites mentioned and I noticed a couple of things: that many references were OLD (late 90's) or references weren't even cited. So there is room for more information in my book.

Thanks for all of the input. I am just going to stick to buying organic, since at least them I know the companies, at least, have the environment's best interest at heart. And try to keep things simple and natural. That must be the easiest way to keep healthy living straight.

And I did find a great toothpaste: Jason PowerSmile, hubby thinks it tastes like colgate. Its basically organic and no SLS... so we're on the right track, it seems...

Thanks again for all of the information.

My family is struggling with the SLS issue too. We stopped using it in toothpastes a few years ago when Dh was having a horrible time with canker sores. He found something that mentioned Sodium Laurel Sulfate as a possible cause and decided to seek out a toothpaste that didn't contain it. Much to our delight and surprise the canker sores stopped instantly and he hasn't had one since. Incredibly dramatic and more than sufficient proof for us.

Just this week I realized that my long-time standard face wash, Cetaphil, contains SLS and I'm struggling with whether to stop using it.

Anyone have any Sodium Laurel Sulfate-free facial cleansers that they love?

I use diluted Dr. Bronner's on my face and I really like it. It's pretty inexpensive and lasts forever. My husband doesn't really like it for his face though, so YMMV.

Honey! It's amazing. I just started using it about three months ago after reading about it on another thread here. I was sceptical at first but my skin has never been so clear or so soft. I just started using it on my arms as well and am noticing a huge difference there as well. It took about three weeks to see a dramatic difference but I am amazed. It doesn't work well for washing of make-up but for just washing your face it's awesome and there's no SLS or other chemicals to worry about.

i get canker sores from it

If I use a toothpaste, even one time, that has sodim lauryl sulfate i immedietly get a canker sore. And ususally canker sores last like 2 weeks, but if I go back to my trader joes or jason brand that has no sls, it will go away in a couple days. SLS might not cause cancer but it is a strong irritant. I used to get canker sores like 1-2 times a month before a friend told me about this. i am still so grateful.

I've had this experience as well. I also found that I would get (since childhood) tiny sores on my scalp, which are annoying if not terribly painful. They went away when I started using the conditoner only method to wash my hair-- coincidentally getting rid of the SLS. Hmmm.

I'm new to this forum and new to green products, but I didn't see anyone mention this: I've heard that SLS and other additives to our everyday products (and plastics) are hormone distruptors. What exactly this means, I'm not sure. But it does make me wonder about fertility issues these days and the possibilty that the generation that is now at it's peak for fertile years have grown up their entire lives with chemicals like these. Hormones also do so, so much, so there's no telling what other issues these hormone disruptors can produce.

I know that SLS causes the skin to not do its most essential job...that job being to act as a barrier. SLS makes it easier for your skin to absorb everything...SLS causes the skin to open up more than it might naturally.

Thank you for posting this.

My mother in law always says, "if you wouldn't drink it, don't rub it on your skin". I think her quote fits particularly well in this thread.

Green Beaver (a Canadian company) sells toothpaste without SLS. Their mint flavour is quite good.

Good luck to you all, and keep on reading those labels!
