swelling

Just as I thought I was going to get out of this pregnancy without any major complaints, the swelling has hit. My poor feet/ankles! I'm hitting the pool tonight for water aerobics, and then I'll go for a nice long walk (if I can squeeze my feet into my shoes).

what do you all do for swelling?
drink more water
eat more protein
get more exercise
put your feet up

anything I'm missing?

Me too, me too. I'm glad that it has held off this long, and it's not uncomfortable... but I don't like seeing that big dent in my calf where my socks end!

The only thing that I might add is drinking something with electrolytes in it - last time around I chugged Smart Water and that seemed to help more than regular water. I've heard that red raspberry leaf tea helps with this too. Foot rubs help, if you can convince anyone to give you foot rubs.

Swimming helps, too if you have access to a pool. I drink tons of water and it seems to help. But look out the days that I have to work. I swell up. What sucks is my hands swell up so much faster than my feet. They get huge!

Yeah, based on how my shoes feel at this very moment, I'm afraid that it has begun over here too. I'm definitely going to try all the suggestions above because last time I had one foot swell up so much more than the other one that I couldn't wear any of my shoes/boots on that foot which was tough in the middle of winter if I wanted to go outside.

I will go swimming on Thursday. I will. I will.

I'm this way too. my right foot swells more.

I'm wondering about acupuncture and compression stockings. Has anyone tried these therapies?

DH and I are in Phoenix for a wedding/ visitng in-laws and all the heat + being on my feet all the time has turned my feet into little blimpy-sausages. Inever thought my feet would look like this.

I second the swimming--it does help, as does a foot soak in very cold water. I got some compression socks, and those seem to help too.

Yeah, I forgot how great swimming can be for swelling! I was going to say salting food to taste can help too as long as your BP is okay.

Demand massages!!!! My (fery holistic) chiropractor was really concerned about the swelling I had last time. She'd spend a good 15 minutes each visit just massaging my feet and demanded that my DH do the same for me every day. It made biiiiiiig difference.

Tell us if any of these ideas work for you!

But please be careful about this. There are accupressure/puncture points around the ankles that can help stimulate labor.

Katherine, since you asked, the pool worked pretty well. However, the swelling is back already this morning, and is accompanied by some tenderness in my calf. Calling the midwives because I'm concerned that it might be a blood clot. It goes without saying that I hope I'm worrying about nothing...

I have compression stockings and they help a lot. When I wear them.

I've had mild swelling for months so I've tried a few things. What seems to work best is drinking lots of water (at least 2L per day), swimming, compression stockings and keeping my feet up, in approx that order. Unfortunately I haven't been able to try massage, dangit!

Isaacsma, I've heard that the chances of stimulating labor by massage are practically nil unless you have someone very strong who is trying to stimulate labor. You have to find the right point(s), then push and hold for at least a minute. Pretty different from a nice soothing foot massage. I understand it may not be worth the risk & it's obviously a personal decision.

Yup, you're right the chances are small unless baby is ready anyway, but it is something to be aware of esp. for women who might be predisposed to PTL.

Well, I'm heading in for a doppler study of my leg to rule out a blood clot. Wish me luck! I hope we (my midwives and I) are simply overreacting!

I hope it's nothing, but best to get it checked out! GL!
