Please help. Rash on my kids butt.

I was giving my two oldest kids a bath tonight (together) and they all of a sudden started screaming. My son jumped up and said his butt was burning and it was red and splotchy. He then proceeds to scream "I forgot to put sunscreen on!!" as if he was outside naked and his butt got burned. Then my DD said hers was hurting too and she showed me. Hers was all red and pimple-y looking. My DD's was the worse. Hers was reddest near the (sorry graphic) tip of the crack and around it. Then on the outside of the cheeks she had little "switch" marks. DS butt wasn't as bright red, nor was it pimple-y, but it was more of a raised sandpapery type rash.

My immediate thought was 1)waters too hot - which it wasn't hot really at all and then 2) Fifth's disease aka slap cheek. Now with fifths I've only seen it on face cheeks, not butt cheeks. And I know it is worse when you are hot.

So I had them put their butts under cold shower water, then they got out.

I still had to get them dinner (Ok, bad mom here), and they got in their PJs. I was just reheating left overs. It took like 10 mins. They came downstairs and ate dinner, still complaining of their butts hurting.

(OK, had to take a break and go clean up puke)

So after they ate they went and got in bed. They were in there laying on their bellies, cuz their bottoms are still hurting.

I just had to now go and clean up vomit cuz my DD was puking.

What's wrong with my kids? FTR, I do not use "chemicals" so I know this isn't a reaction to a cleanser on my tub.

What do you clean your tub with? Maybe there was residue on the bottom of the tub? I had that happen as a child - very unpleasant.

Edit: Nevermind, somehow totally missed the last line of your post. Durr.

Yeah, I'm thinking something viral too. Isn't it just weird though that they would both get a rash at the exact same time?

I'm sitting here freaked that there is something in my water. However, if it was in the water the rash would be all over, right?

I'm sure it is viral. It's just weird. :

another vote for viral. Do you have anything to put on the rashes? When the boys has chicken pox the Aveeno lotion (made for chicken pox...actually says cp on the bottle) was heaven sent.

Hope they get better fast.

Viral is my vote too.

But just to be extra careful, maybe check with your water utility that there wasn't anything weird going on. Over the summer, one of the towns had a major screw up when they put a cleaning chemical in for maintenance but forgot to shut off the valve that delivers clean water. Freaky stuff.
