5yo's permanent tooth in behind baby tooth-WWYD?

I just noticed today that my 5yo's permanent tooth has come in behind her baby tooth (bottom, middle-right).

I'm interested in people's experience with this...

* Did you have a dentist pull one or more baby teeth to make room for permanent ones?

OR

* Did you let nature take its course and let the baby-tooth root dissolve and fall out on it's own? If so, did you encourage your child to wiggle it or did you do the wiggling?

What was the result? Did permanent teeth move into proper place with either action?

Thanks!!!

That is why I make sure to pull dd's teeth as soon as they are loose enough. Saves a lot of trouble in the long run.

Unfortunately, hers are not loose at all yet.

How did you pull your Dd's teeth once they were loose (how loose?) and how did you keep your child from freaking out?

Is it possible it was loose before and she didnt tell you? it is really unusual for a baby tooth not to get loose before the new tooth comes in. This is one of the issues you run into if the baby tooth isnt removed it will tighten back down as the new tooth erupts.

I used a string. When it was loose enough that I could wiggle it really well I knew it was time. Since the root disolves there really isnt much holding it at that point.

She was ok with it for the most part except when it bled a little so when I went to pull the second one a few days later she cried some and we talked and finally I was able to pull it.

Her top 2 teeth are loose now and it wont be long till they need to be pulled and I know she wont like it much but when it is all over she is thrilled to have her tooth in her hand.

Since the baby tooth is jammed in there now I would take her and have it pulled by a dentist because it being there will affect the alignment of the permanant teeth.

I forcibly wiggled it last night to start loosening it. It is a little looser this morning and I think I will keep wiggling it through the day and see how loose I can get it.

So, when you say "string", how exactly do you pull it? Sorry for all the questions...I had ALL my baby teeth pulled in a dentist's chair so this is all new to me and I'd REALLY like to avoid having her go that route. Thanks for you help!

One of my guys had this happen...we called him "sharky" for a while since he resembled a shark with their rows of teeth. His baby teeth never got loose on their own so our pediatric dentist ended up pulling 6 of them and the new permanent teeth just magically moved up into their correct place within a short time. The pulling was completely non-traumatic and painless. The baby teeth still had long, strong roots when pulled, so they were not likely to have come out on their own. The dentist was not phased at all by this, he said it is not common, but not really rare either.

You tie one end around the tooth and the other end around a door knob and then slam the door! (Obviously I'm kidding!!)

My son has lost 4 baby teeth (the bottom two center and the top two center) and the permanent teeth were in before the baby teeth on all four of them. He was at the dentist a few weeks ago and she told him if his front baby teeth didn't come out in 3 weeks she would have to pull them. But luckily they came out a few days ago.

Anyway, if your DD's baby teeth are wiggly, I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep wiggling them and they will come out.

I took thin but strong string. I had some that came off a tiny yoyo and tied it down as far as I could on the tooth and gave it a tug and out it came. It dosnt hurt and there is a tiny amount of blood.

I had every single one of my baby teeth pulled by my dad and they always pulled them once they were loose enough because of the possible complications of leaving them in there. Better to get them out with a little pain now than to deal with crooked teeth and braces later.

My moms ex did this to me when I was 6. I screamed when he went to slam the door....and afterwards, no one could find my tooth...he told me I shouldnt have screamed, cause I ended up swallowing it....I cried and cried for days...we found it a few days later behind the couch. I laugh about it now, but I still remember how it felt.

Ugh. Unpleasant as it may be, I also recommend pulling it. My family has weird tooth problems and this is one of them. My baby teeth didn't fall out on their own, and eventually at age 11 I had to undergo surgery under general anesthesia to pull 14 baby teeth and 4 impacted wisdom teeth, followed by braces for 8 years. It's better to pull now, so the teeth can move into the right place and not just get shoved around in a very crowded jaw (like mine were).

my son had the shark look a few months ago. both of his bottom front adult teeth came in behind his baby teeth. i let them be and they pushed the baby teeth out all by themselves- the adult ones look great.

My ds has this problem on his top center teeth right now. They are loose, one more than the other. Dentist says keep wiggling them. The new teeth have broken through the gums and pushed one baby tooth so it points straght out. It's really creeping me out and I wish it would fall out already.

My dd had this happen and she had the two baby teeth pulled. Her baby teeth still had very long roots and were not coming out anytime soon. I'm glad I did that. Her adult teeth that came in early were crooked but as soon as those baby ones came out, they started to get much straighter. Now here we are a year later and she has not lost any more teeth yet. I think one might be slightly loose.
