Anyone have exp w/ Children's Crowns?

Hi there,

So I've known for a while that my kids had cavities. We went to the dentist about a year ago and I was told that they each had 4 (!!) We eat well, severly limit sugar, juice, yada yada, so I was shocked. I chose not to fill them and instead tried dietary changes to (hopefully) reverse the damage. Kids had no pain, nor could I visually see the cavities, so I felt this was a sound decision.

I have been watching my kids teeth and noticed a couple of months ago that 2 of their back teeth had 'gaps' that were getting visually larger. I decided to take them back to the dentist before they worsened.

The good news is that of the 4 cavities, only 2 (on each) grew into something more (is that good news?!) BUT because of the size of the decay, she is recommending crowns. CROWNS!

The other 2 cavities she says she sees, but they do not need fillings and she believes with continued attention they won't have to be. (that's the good news).

But CROWNS?? This freaked me out. I don't want my kids to have silver teeth! It's of course more $$ for white ones, which I am probably going to get...but can anyone who has experienced dental work like this please ease my fears? My kids are 6 and 8.

We are going to continue addressing the kids dental issues through nutrition, but at this point I don't see that I have much option other than to listen to the dentist and get the crowns.

Please share if you have any advice or have gone through anything similar! Thank you for reading

My dentist told me they do crowns in kids because if they have to fill half the tooth, it is likely to fall out. ETA: The filling, not the tooth!

My oldest got a stainless steel crown on her last upper molar when she was 6. The only way I can see it is if she opens her mouth to show me. I think it might actually be on a permanent tooth because I remember the dentist saying she could get a tooth colored one when she was 16. It was like 3 years ago and I really can't remember.

My 3 yo is getting one on one of his upper first molars on Friday. I probably will be able to see it but it doesn't bother me. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I told him he would have a silver tooth and he started calling it his robot tooth.

I am in this same situation. My son who is 5 "may" need a crown on his first upper molar. I REALLY do not want him to have a silver tooth, let alone that he does not want one either. We are going to see another dentist on Oct 10 and I am hoping they can just do a big filling. Each dentist has a different opinion, so I am hoping that is his.

Isn't this just awful dealing with kiddos teeth problems.

My son has 5 silver crowns. 4 on the top teeth and one on his molar. He is 3. They do not bother him or anyone else at all. Nobody cares about them. I was very upset about it before it happened, now I wished I wouldnt have wasted negative energy on worrying. It is fine now.

My DD has a crown on her front tooth. It is white - and was not horribly expensive. It looks great (you cannot tell it is a crown)

She did not need crowns on her back teeth, but if she needed silver ones I would have been OK with it. I spoke to her dentist (whom I adore!) and he said he when he did free dental clinics (see why I adore him, lol) they only had the budget for silver crowns. The parents were upset, the dentist (in the beginning of their tenure) were upset, but many of the kids thought silver teeth were cool!
