bug bites

I'm wondering if maybe my son (10 years old) has an allergy to bugs, most likely mosquitoes.
Whenever he is stung, the skin around the bite swells up huge and gets hot and red. A couple of years ago we had to take him to Urgent Care and he was prescribed a strong antibiotic. I'm not sure of the details, but I think his scratching may have gotten the bites infected.
He has another one tonight, that's gotten really big. I measured the diameter and it is 3.5 inches. The entire area is swollen and feels very hard. My son couldn't sleep from the itching, and so my husband has gone to the pharmacy to get him some Benadryl.
None of us really get bug bites like this. Heck, I don't even see many bugs around here. We live in Arizona.
I'd appreciate any input. TIA.

The only bites I've had like that have been from spiders. Have you seen what's biting him?

No, I haven't actually seen what's been biting him. I just assumed it was a mosquito. The bites themselves don't look like anything extraordinary, and just what you would expect from a mosquito bite. It's just that his skin reacts so strongly to them. Poor little guy...
