I'm doing it, but you probably knew that from my AC article - lol. We had a thread here last year and we also had one going on the Nano website.

Last year was my first year and I completed it. Yay! It is so much fun. The real key is pacing yourself. Try to write a little on most days and never let yourself get behind.

But, I think their site might be down right now while they get it updated for the upcoming months. I believe it's supposed to open back up on Oct. 1st so people can start signing up.

During NaNoWriMo, writers write a novel (50,000 words) during the month of November. Writing starts on Nov 1st and ends at midnight on Nov. 30th. It's a great way to challenge yourself, force yourself to think outside of the box and be creative. It also greatly enhanced my typing skills - LOL. I loved it and can't recommend it enough.

ETA - The NaNoWriMo site is not down. You just can't sign up or post in the forums right now. You can still check it out though.

I think I'm going to do it, too! I've been trying to think of a good enough idea to get me started. Anyone know what they are planning to write about yet?

I'm thinking about it. Dh is not exactly supportive of the idea and thinks I should just write and not sign up.

I'm thinking about it, too. I tried last year and didn't succeed, but maybe this year? I need an idea first. Hmmm...

There's no shame in not "winning", so there's no reason not to sign up I signed up last year, but my son was born in October so I wrote next to nothing. But, I still enjoyed browsing the forums.

I'm definitely going for it this year. I've got an idea bouncing around my head that I'm itching to put on paper.

I agree with the pp. There is no shame in not completing. I felt like I got a lot of writing energy from signing up and being a part of the community there. I also like being able to enter my totals in each day and seeing my little bar graph rising.

I've got my idea. It's been bouncing around my head since summer time. I can't wait to get started on it.

Your welcome. I'm excited that I was able to get someone else excited about Nano! LOL Are you still planning on writing for AC in Nov? I will try...

What about the rest of you AC mamas?

well I really hope to keep writing for AC in Nov! we'll see though!

oh and I have an idea already (think uber crunchy! ). Actually I had the idea before I found out about nano so it just will work out well I think! (good timing!)

Hi! I plan to do this for the first time but I'm so shy about it. I know I'm a good writer but I just can't think of any good story ideas. I'm afraid I'll start NaNo but not have enough material to work with. (I can't come up with plot in the moment as well as seem people apparently can-- eventually I need to know where I'm going with it all.)

So I feel that I need to have some kind of a plot figured out first. Otherwise I'm going to get hung up on not knowing what the heck is happening next in my story and I won't be able to meet my writing quota each day.

I have been studying The Heroes Journey idea, and Dramatica, and other plot-building tools, but it still doesn't give me any story ideas. I feel kinda lame!

I had come up with one idea, but then I realized that the ending I had thought of was almost identical to the ending in someone else's (well-known) book. Plus it wasn't really awesome to begin with. Sigh. How do you come up with a good story idea?

Don't worry about the ending. I had something in mind last year and as my characters developed and the story moved along, it went in directions I had never planned. That is one of the fun things about Nano. You never know where your characters are going to take your story. You will be pleasantly surprised at the places you will go with it.

I think if you can start with a main character and a basic idea of what that character's problem is going to be, then you have enough. You don't have to know how it is all going to be resolved at this point.

I actually found it helpful to not plan too far ahead last year. I did the bulk of my planning each night, after I finished writing. I would take 5 minutes to jot out a quick outline for the next day. I asked myself these questions - What characters were going to be in the new scene? What was the problem going to be? How would that one scene get resolved?

Check out The Marshall Plan for Novel Writing. The book recommends a lot of preplanning. But, I didn't do it that way. I found the book after Nano had already started, so my first few chapters are all over the place. They had characters that never appeared again in the novel - lol. That book helped me get on track and I plan to loosely use it as a guide again this year. It's all about learning as you go.

ok this sounds like way too much fun!

now to get over my insecurities.......
what sort of planning is everyone doing? basic story lines? characters? or nothing at all? what sort of pre planning is allowed?
Thanks, Twocoolboys! that helps a lot!

Something else I was thinking about (while I was washing dishes!) was how I haven't felt particularly passionate about any of the story ideas I come up with and that's why I end up discarding them before I get too far. So I came up with these ideas to work with to help me develop a story idea I can feel passionate about-- thought they might be useful to others--

What things am I afraid of? What do I fear most? What would make me the most angry? What makes me just fall in love with a person, place, thing, or idea? What excites me the most?

Thanks!

Actually, Dh's reason is kind of sweet. He's not worried I won't finish, but is, instead, worried that I'll write something so amazing that someone will "steal" it. I've tried reassuring him that won't happen, but he's a pessimist at heart.

This is always my worry, too. I think they have some scramble safeguards in place...didn't someone mention that?

I have written a children's book and then told about a million people my plotline. Still waiting to see it on a shelf before I've had my own published! LOL

Thank you! These are good questions.
