Help with life insurance

As parents, we've now decided we need life insurance to protect the family should the unthinkable happen.

I went through the broker my employer (a small business) uses. I got an initial quote based on a few basic questions. Unfortunately I forgot the quote and don't have it in front of me, but I believe it was around $200/year for me and $250/year for DH. That's the preferred, non-smoker rate.

We went through the whole application process including a blood test and medical history. I now have been given a quote of $400/year based on the history. I don't know what specifically excluded me from preferred status.

Questions:

1) Should I bother asking specifically what excluded me from preferred?

2) If I do find out, is there any appeal process if I feel it's not valid for some reason?

3) If there is a process, is it even worth it?

4) I understand there's a database that insurance companies use. Anyone know what information is stored there?

5) Should I bother trying to go through the whole process again to get a quote from another company?

We're still waiting on DH's quote, but I can guarantee you that he also didn't make preferred. Unfortunately we made several errors with him. One was that when the nurse was taking his history, he didn't hear her say "In the past 10 years have you...?" and instead answered based on his whole life. For example, he mentioned he had an ulcer in 2nd grade (after his parents divorced). But he's never had that problem again, and it's been over 20 years. So he should not have answered that, but it went into the file. Same with asthma, he has not had an episode or been treated for it for the past 10 years. The asthma is going to be a big deal for the insurance company, and it's a real shame for us since it honestly shouldn't have come up. (I made a few boo-boos myself, it wasn't just DH ).

So now I just feel at a loss. I worry we permenently screwed up our chances to get insurance at a preferred rate, with any company.

Any advice?

The life insurance market has gotten more competitive over recent years as people have access to information (via the internet) and companies have to work a bit harder for the policies so don't worry too much if you should decide to shop around.

The broker should help clear up any incorrect information at the very least by putting you back in contact with the underwriter.

FYI - Our bank offers the first $1,000 free of charge for the primary account holders and offers the opportunity to add additional insurance in $10,000 increments with no health verifications until you reach $100,000 per insured person. The rates are competitive. If yours offers insurance, it might be worth checking out.

1) Should I bother asking specifically what excluded me from preferred?
Sure. I know for me my asthma (that's controlled with an inhaler every once in a while) bumped my yearly premium up an additional $140. Our agent was telling me about a client whose asthma went dormant (well, you know what I mean) for over 10 years, but since it was in her history, she didn't get the preferred plan price. I didn't want to disclose it, but dh said better safe than sorry - if I died two weeks after the policy went into effect from an asthma attack brought on by 200 bee stings, dh and the kids wouldn't get a dime if I didn't disclose it. So yeah, my policy is slightly more expensive than dh's for the amount of coverage, but it's still not too bad. Plus it's better than nothing, you know?

2) If I do find out, is there any appeal process if I feel it's not valid for some reason?
You could try. Might not work and just be a big waste of time - talk to your agent about that.

3) If there is a process, is it even worth it?
Maybe. You could also try shopping around with other companies. The agent we used was an affiliate of Dave Ramsey, and got quotes for both dh and I from 10 companies. Was actually pretty simple, even if I did have a bunch of seemingly dumb questions for him.

4) I understand there's a database that insurance companies use. Anyone know what information is stored there?
Don't have a clue about this. Our agent had all the info, and it wasn't officially released to an insuring company until we decided to go ahead on two certain policies after the quotes.

5) Should I bother trying to go through the whole process again to get a quote from another company?
If you have the time, why not? It'd give you different options.

Even the preferred rates they quoted you sound really high to me unless you are getting quite hefty coverages. Is it term life insurance or whole life?

If I were in your shoes, I'd definitely shop around with a different company.

It's term (20 years) and the policy is for $300k. Maybe that's high, I don't know. We're not high-income earners or anything, but we wanted to have 5 years worth of replacement income for the household (i.e. not just DH's or mine but both) plus some extra to cover any expenses related to the unthinkable (medical costs, funeral costs, whatever). Maybe that's too much.

Thanks for the other responses. I'm thinking I might talk to the agent frankly about my concerns.

We have our life insurance medical appt. in about an hour. We have a fasting bloodtest (I am STARVING!), weight, BP and medical history. I really hope we can get the preferred rate, especially DH. He had some medical stuff this spring but it was taken care of. I don't think that amount sounds that high for term. WE are getting a term policy as well for 1M, since we will have 4 kids to put thru college should the unthinkable happen!
