is 19 weeks too soon?

I got my sonogram on the day I was 19 weeks exactly. It showed a little girl. My doctor called today to let me know we have to schedule another sonogram because the baby wouldn't stay still long enough to get all the pictures she needed.

She asked were we able to find the sex of the baby and I told the doctor it is a girl.

She said not to start to paint the room pink yet becasue at 19 weeks it might be too early to tell.

Is that right or should I return all the pink ruffled clothes I bought already: ? The woman who did the sonogram seemed confident enough to tell me it was a girl. We didn't see and male parts, so... What do you think?

I was 19 weeks 2 days and my u/s tech didn't seem to think it was too early. Everyone I know has had an u/s around 19-20 weeks and found out the sex. Boy I'm not really sure what to think now I guess!

Our u/s tech said she saw 3 dots that indicated girl parts.

Thats what I thought. My doctor is weird sometimes, I wish I didn't live in a small town, she is the only female doctor within 2 hours from me, so I kinda have to deal with her I guess.

I will have the ultra sound tech check again in my next sonogram. I hope it is still the same. My little brother (he is 8) was more excited than anyone in my family when he found out he was going to have a neice. He even wrote a paper about her for school (he got an A!)

I was told I"m having a boy at 16 weeks....

I really don't think it's too early....now you have me wondering. Maybe they have been wrong at 19 weeks and don't want to upset you if they are wrong again?

SIL found out at 16 weeks it was a girl and I found out 18 weeks it was a boy

i dont think its too early at all

UM NO the sex organs are FULLY formed at 19wks at 15wks they are fully formed. I don't konw why they would have said that unless they just didn't see it very well

I think some docs just feel the need to give a disclaimer to EVERYTHING. If the person doing the ultrasound was confident then I would take their word for it! THere's always a chance they missed something, but I think if they aren't sure they'll say so.

Congratulations!

I had two techs tell me it was a girl at the 18-week ultrasound. And they pointed out the "three lines/ triangle" that indicates female parts. After comparing to all those ultrasounds of boys that people have been posting, I'm pretty sure it's a girl because I definately didn't see any boy parts!
That said, it's never totally accurate but chances are, you have a girl : )

I know people who have found out as early as 14 weeks (I'm a surro and some surros have TONS of u/s.) The sex organs are definetly formed by then, but...I do know of one lady who was told she was having a girl at 20 weeks, only to find out at 36 weeks that 'she' was actually a 'he'. So it does happen, but rarely.

how comfortable i would be with knowing for sure, would be weither the tech identified the actual girl parts or just didnt see a penis

i know a couple women who where told it was a girl... because the doctor didnt see a penis...but then it turned out to be a boy

I found out w/ my daughter at 18 weeks And all my sons 15-17 weeks So I'd say it isn't to early

I think it is because boys are more easily identified than girls. That said, my friend was told she was having a girl; Joseph is now 5 LOL. My SIL got a very early u/s at 14 weeks and was told it was a boy; Karlee is almost 1.

I found out with 2 of my kiddos at 19 weeks - one boy, one girl. Hope that helps.

at 19w even with my oldest, they could easily tell she was a girl. I had a very early ultrasound at 15.4weeks with this one and they said 70% girl. But my tech said that they try to say it's too early or try to put you off a while just for a second or third ultrasound just in case. It's always a guessing game. You can never be 100% unless you have an amnio or wait until the birth. Maybe your tech was just being cautious and didn't want you to paint the room pink and have a penis show up at birth????

Depending on the resolution of the ultrasound and what they're looking for (i.e. the presence of labia or the absence of a penis ) it can be hard to tell... but it can also be very easy. Both of my girls not only didn't have penises, they had clearly visible labia (looked a bit like coffee beans). The boys were waving their bits for all the world to see. It can be harder to tell some boys, because the testes often don't drop until birth (in fact, it's pretty normal for them not to descend for a few weeks/months, I think).

19 weeks, if they saw it, they saw it. Paint isn't all that expensive; keep a can of blue around for "trim."

I think the earlier its' done, the more inaccurate. if you look at pics of 12-14 wk fetuses, girls actually look more like boys still.

either way your tech has a 50/50 chance of being right!
