Chiropractic care question

Thread Starter
I went to a chiropractor today because my hips are just killing me and I need some sort of relief.

The practice is very much oriented towards pregnancy related care and families (in fact 2 of the other 3 patients there were also pregnant).

They did some testing first and then some adjustments.

My question is: is it normal to feel nauseous, dizzy and see spots and hear ringing after being adjusted? And get all sweaty? I was worried I wasn't going to be able to drive home, but after 10 minutes, started to feel better.

I guess I'm just a bit paranoid because when I was pregnant with DD I went for a massage that was supposed to be geared to pregnant women and the next day ended up at L & D at the hospital because I was in so much pain from something having moved. All was fine then, but it just makes me nervous that I had such an immediate reaction to the chiropractic adjustements.

It's been a while since I was adjusted, and I am interested in what the LAura's have to say, but I believe it can happen.

This happens to some people new to accupuncture (happened to me!) and I probably could have crashed my car with as loopy as I was after the first 1-3 appointments. My husband has gotten desperately ill from a full body massage before.

I think that any time you do this type of therapy that seems like it's just cracking bones, rubbing flesh or sticking needles, it really opens up your body to this immediate rush of energy and toxins that can make you a bit sick until you're used to it and it's cleaned out!

Also interested in hearing what the Laura's have to say!

I like Gina's answer and am also wondering if you are nervous about being adjusted by any chance?

I also got really sick after my first adjustment 2 weeks ago. My chiro had warned me though, he called it the MC Truck syndrom, like a truck had hit you. He told me to drink a lot of water and it happens to around 20% of patients. It hasn;t happened again and I am so glad I went. I was almost immobile two weeks ago and now I can chase ds around again.
Feel better!!!

I'd be very curious to know exactly what the Dr. adjusted....but the short answer is yes, the reaction you had can happen and is not totally out of the ordinary.

By adjusting the joints of the body, your nervous system is affected and depending on where and how you are adjusted, different parts of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) can be affected. The two parts of the ANS are sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (sit back and relax). What you're describing sounds like a response of your sympathetic nervous system to the adjustment and so the sweating, nausea etc are likely from that. I'm sure it's stopped by now. If you're prone to this kind of reaction, it usually lasts 10-30 minutes then fades away. You may want to ask for a more gentle adjustment next time or request a different technique (there are tons). Definitely discuss it with the Dr. at the beginning of your next visit. I hope this explanation helps and hope you are feeling better!

Laura, what do you think?

Laura #1 already gave a great ans! it is certainly not unheard of to have a reaction as you describe,(although it isn't common) I would definitely speak to the doc about it to maybe alter the techniques a bit and see how you do.. there is no reason that you can't settle on a treatment plan that works well, just be sure to give the doc feedback,, I have pts that just do not tolerate forceful upper cervical work (or occ, mid thoracic) , there are SOO many options to get a great adjustment I am sure it can be worked out.

ironically, I don't tolerate high force upper cervical work (similar rxn you had, on occ) I do very well with low force work

try not to be nervous, the treatments will help,,
