I have a guy coming to look at my DH (deceased) ATV tomorrow. If he wants it, how do I ask him to pay? cash only? check? is a cashier's check a no no?

Cash or paypal. I would not take a cashier's check. A certified check from his bank but I would hold the title until it cleared.

We sold two cars this summer on craigslist. Personally, I would take cash only. A cashiers check can be forged. A legitimate person can get cash as easily as a cashiers check.

I actually got to hold 10,000 cash in my hand! It was quite the experience and made me really nervous. Since we were buying a new car I immediately went to pick up the new car and paid the 10K cash to the dealership - and the poor guy was as nervous as me about having all that cash.

Anyhow - I wouldn't take a check in any form, IMHO.

Cash or a bank check

We sold a car on craigslist a few months ago and only accepted cash. We also had the buyer sign that he was in fact the new owner in case of anything that might come up (we live in an area with a lot of red light cameras, for instance).

We just sold one tonight. We took a cashier's check. But since there's still a lien on the vehicle we don't even have the title, the bank does. So they won't release it to us to give to him until his check clears. I'd much rather take a check than cash -- it would make me really nervous to have that much cash.

Cash only. It's just so much easier.

Just be careful with taking the checks, because of course forged bank checks are how a lot of fraud artists operate. I'm not sure someone would try that in person with a car which would be more traceable I'd think, but just keep it in mind.

I think holding the title until you have the money makes the most sense.

i would also just stick with cash. Like another person said If they can can get a bank check, they can get the cash just the same.

Cash only. Money talks, you know?
Plus you don't get screwed for non-sufficient funds or whatever.

Yes, but then you have to check that the cash is real. I would meet at a bank so they could check the money.

I just sold my truck yesterday, and accepted cash only, since that's what my dad said to do. I also second the idea of having them sign something to the effect that they bought the car from you, so if they get in an accident, get a ticket, etc...they are responsible for paying themselves.

well the guy didn't show up today as he had to work late. maybe saturday though.

now i have another problem with the title as DH had a honda card that was what was basically a lien to the quad. it was paid off in 2002 or so in full, but the bank the Honda card was through went out of business. I can't find any papers or anything from the pay off. In any case I had to call various directories and do about 10 google searches, call the dmv twice, the place he bought the vehicle, then called the ABC (AZ bank comm.), OCC, FDIC today and still have to call the bank comm. of DE tomorrow. just a total run around! I need a lien release from a bank that no longer exists! this totally blows! :

previously I sold a truck of DH. I let the guy have it for like a month before finally straigtening out that title, he wasn't driving it though just fixing it up, and he was also someone DH employed when he was alive (in that case it was a simple affidavit declaring me his heir through DMV).

anyway my whole point is if this guy want to buy this quad (he seems fairly serious about it thus far) would you let the guy take the quad without the title if he pays? what if I write a bill of sale? I mean if I have his money he's not likely to wreck it right? I would write a bill of sale so he knows I won't report it stolen. or should I just wait until I get the title stuff figured out (hopefully I'll know something for sure tomorrow) but I still don't know that it won't take awhile to straighten this out as my name was not on the lein, they may want proof, etc. (ie;death cert, marriage lics, etc) i may not have the title in hand for a bit. advice?

I thought I would just make a quick phone call to get the lien release this morning , instead I spent like 3 hours on the phone and still have no resolution!
