?Doula training?

I was wondering how to go about being trained to be a doula? I had a doula/midwife with my last birth and I loved it. I would like to show everyone what a great experience birth can be. The thing is I dont have alot of money to pay up front and it would have to be something that I can do online. Nothing against those who are certified, but do I even need to be certified or is there something I can do like get a mentor or something?? I would really like to start learning and money could be an issue with only one income. Any advice would be great. Thank you

I don't think certification is necessary though training is certainly helpful. I trained with both ALACE and DONA, enjoyed them both but really loved ALACE.

No, you don't need to certify. I think that reading up a lot on birth and comfort measures and such and then shadowing a doula would be a great way to learn.

Birth Arts International has distance learning options and you can purchase the program in sections

I did all the reading and some of my births before I went to the training with ALACE. That way I had time to save up for the training, and could buy the books one at a time (they list the required reading on their site).

THat said, they list their required reading on their site. It's all GREAT info, and sooooo, if you had somebody who'd be willing to let you shadow, you may just want to read up and then do the work to get the experience. I found that the ALACE trainin was AWESOME...however, I've suggested to women I know who can't afford it right now that the training may not be necessary. It is immensely useful and an awesome experience...but I've only ever had one client ask me who I'm certified through. They generally don't care, if you have the skills, in my experience.

CBI (Childbirth International) has a distance program, and I believe they work out payment plans as well.
Goodluck!

Another option for ALACE is to coordinate a workshop near you. If you get a minimum number of people to attend, you attend for free. The workshop is really phenomenal. I highly recommend it if there is any way to do it (and I will probably never certify, I just don't care enough to do the paperwork).
