did my waters break? (TMI?)

OKay, so I'm sure like everyone of you still pregnant, I have to pee almost every hour at night. So, just over an hour ago, I got up to go pee. We live in a tiny apartment, but I am still in the hallway when I am like - ah, am i peeing myself?!? - I tried to hold it til on the toilet (and to some extent could, but not everything). I peed (heard more than the usual little pee), wiped lots - cause that is what was needed, stood up, dripped stuff, wiped, sat, peed, wiped more... The thing is, I was told amniotic fluid doesn't smell. But there was a smell, and it wasn't like pee. The last couple of weeks I have associated this smell with the mucousy stuff and what i thought was amniotic fluid that would make my underwears a bit wet.
It is still only 4:30am, so I am not into calling the midwife right now ;-) And I am trying to let me partner get as much sleep as possible. I went back to bed to experience some minor cramping/contractions (which really I've had off & on for 4+ weeks now), but was distracted with hunger and what was going on, so got up. After eating a bit more, i think I will try to get more rest, knowing that 4 hours of sleep is probably not enough to get me through labour, if this is it...
So, what are your opinions? Did my water break or did I just lose control over my bladder?

My opinion is no your water did not break. I have had this happen to me on several occasions and basically I was just peeing on myself. The baby is prob. low he/she is just right on your bladder in the right way that it is nearly impossible to stop some from coming out. If it was your water, it would continue to leak. Jmo.

hey mama.

my MW told me when I called her to lay down for 30 minutes and if I stood up and a bit came out then it was my water...if nothing came out, it was pee before...

so i did this and a tiny bit came out so i gently poked (only word i can think of bc i didn't push) with a tad of pressure on the top of my belly and some more came out....so it was my water leaking...slowly....

it didn't trickle continuously.....just when i would stand from reclining or sitting....from the sofa, chair, bed, bathroom....i totally thought since it was leaking that it would leak all the time....but no...

my experience was similar to what you wrote about...stand up, sit down, stand up, wipe wipe wipe.....i totally thought it was my bladder just giving up from carrying the baby SOOOO LOW the entire time....i used to joke with the MW that when this baby dropped my belly would be on my knee...

I thought someone said amniotic fluid smells like semen? Not sure if anyone can validate this?

Thank you.
I guess we'll see what the day brings... I've got a bit more sleep in the meantime, and would like some more, then I'll probably call the MW and see what she says. I put a cloth (menstrual) pad on (about the time I wrote my question) and it is definitely damp through.
I'd say the smell is somewhat like semen, certainly more so than urine.

Thanks again everyone! And best wishes to you all!!!

Update: headed for a speculum exam this afternoon to double check if it is waters or other that was leaking - in the meantime, the contractions are picking up... I really do hope this is not more teasing ones!!!

hey seeing this late, but i wanted to say that when my water broke it trickled at first. i thought i couldn't hold my pee either as it dribbled down my legs on the way to the potty.

in my situation though contractions started right after that and an hour later my water GUSHED all over my bed, grrr.

hope to hear some good news from you soon !!!!

Mine sure did! It's also slightly slippery...kinda like the clear pre ejaculate fluid.

I have to say how weird it was to have that smell coming from me .

My midwife on the other hand says her amniotic fluids in the past did not smell like her husband at all. So maybe it depends.

Maybe a leak smells different than a full rupture. I had a leak.

Sending you peaceful calm birth vibes. I have no experience with water breaking on its own other than very very late in labor. I have heard it smells like semen or somewhat metallic.

When my water broke it wasn't a huge gush but a constant trickle all day long. When it first broke it felt like I was peeing on myself so I got up and went to the bathroom and when it ran down my leg I knew.

Hi all!
So... about a week to catch-up on in terms of updates
First, after a 2nd exam (for lack of better word), it was found that my waters were still intact. It is possible that there had been a tear & some escaped, and the tear repaired itself, we don't really know. In any case, contractions certainly picked up from there, and the short of the story is Friday afternoon (4:30pm-ish), I had my waters broken for me. I was getting quite tired, as were my doula & partner. We wanted to get the show on the road! We are glad that we did, cause 12 hours later, my baby was born at home - Justin Ingvar James (and my partner's family name) - but the placenta did not deliver, so I had to go the the hospital for that. It was an amazingly calm transition, and we apparently had the 2 best nurses there - who were absolutely amazing!!! (I should note that by the time 'pushing' came along, my contractions were slowed to 5 minutes apart, which made for 3.5 hours of pushing, but lots of resting in between. I could actually hardly even feel the contractions, mainly just guessed that that's what they were. So not surprising the placenta wasn't coming out on its own.)
We are doing well since. Justin is super alert, although a wee bit jaundiced -- and since we live in rainy Vancouver, Justin has yet to meet the sun!!!

Justin's stats: 8lbs, 2oz & 21.25 inches long
Justin's middle names are in honour/memory of well-respected family members who passed in the last year, one from my side (grandfather Ingvar), and one from my DP's (Uncle Jim).
