I swear, its like he manufactures gas. We'll burp him after a feed and a little while later he has more gas. And he sooo uncomfortable. I've eliminated daiary, am doing block feeding, massage, etc. No luck.

Anyone in the same boat?

Might be too early...

I had real issues with my first child who was extremely colicky (hate that term, so vague, but whatever). Anyway, I didn't try with him, but it was suggested by my chiro, to try digestive enzymes if I experience this again. Not sure how old your baby is, but good luck.

Elimination diets suck! BTDT for REAL!!!!!!!

Mine was gassy yesterday and it just happened to be while we were at the doctor's office. He was really letting them go and it was so loud. It was a little embarrassing but funny at the same time. He would grunt really loud and then just fart as loud as an adult! That's my boy!

i actually feel like i hate my liilte guy right now. please know that that is total sleep deprivation t5alking but he's strapped on my chest SHRIEKING. he does it if i put him down, sit him up, put him on my shoulder... whatever. it's so frustrating. for the first hour and a half i'm okay but after that i really have some feelings of wanting to throw him. sorry. i never would... just a fantasy at the moment. nursing is supposed to be such a loving, soothing thing and it just isn't here right now. i had one fussy babe but not to this degree. can't put this one down for even a minute but he's not even really happy when i'm holding him. grrrrr.

ETA: he's sleeping so peacefully right now. My dh is home. I feel much better. The weekend is here so maybe I'll get a little night assistance and catch up on my sleep. I realize I am soooooo blessed to have healthy babe but honestly... it all takes a toll on your sometimes. sorry I had to vent.

no apologies needed. digestive distress in a babe that you can't solve can really push your patience to the limit!

can someone please define/explain the theory behind block feeding?

One of my guy's troubles is he has trouble passing gas. It looks so painful. I *wish* he could just let them rip but he can't. It's heartbreaking.

Piepie, Anyhow, here is the theory behind block feeding. It's thought that some women product more foremilk than other. Foremilk is the less fatty milk that the baby drinks first before getting to the fatty hindmilk. Since the foremilk is less fatty its more sugary and ends up making the baby more gassy. It also digests really quickly which makes the baby want to eat more frequently and causes a whole cycle of gas.

Block feeding is when you either feed for x # of hours on one side or do y # of feedings on one side. The thought is that you will be draining the foremilk and your baby will really be getting at the fatty hindmilk, which will slow down the digestive process and leave babe less gassy. It's also supposed to help eliminate green poops. The trick is deciding how long to stay on one side. I've heard 2-4 hours. Part of this depends on how long babe goes between feeding.

Does that make sence?

I'm sorry, I'm not in your ddc and haven't read the whole thread, but I saw your title and wanted to respond . . . Dd was a VERY gassy baby. She has severe food allergies and this is how it first manfiested. It is my very strong belief that most infant gas and reflux is due to food allergies. I would keep with the eliminations--how strict are you with dairy? Be VERY strict, like no dairy (whey, casein, lactose, cheese, yogurt, milk, ice cream, cream cheese, etc) from any animal at all ever. Gluten and soy are also very common allergens. I have heard that alliums (onions, garlic) can be common causes of gas in breastfed infants as well.

Infant reflux is a serious condition and deserves to be treated. However, you should know that acid blocking medications inhibit the absorbption of minerals (calcium, iron), because minerals require stomach acid to be absorbed. These medicines should be taken very seriously and should only be used for as short a time as possible (ie while you run some eliminations and see what's bothering the baby). My daughter developed severe pica after 15 mo on reflux meds because she wasn't getting enough minerals into her system, despite an excellent diet.

Enzymes didn't help for me.

huh, I didn't know that what I do is called block feeding. If I switch breasts for every feeding my kiddos always ended up with green poop, so I generally feed off one side for 3 or 4 feedings and then switch, or sometimes go all day on one then all night on the other side. I am tandeming too, so have another kiddo in teh equation.

I hope you can figure out what is bothering your baby, that is so hard to have a fussy babe.

Mine's really gassy, but it really doesn't seem to bother her. She's very happy, rarely cries, and is very "regular" - she just STINKS! I thought it was ok until I read the PP about food alergies...I hope that's not what's causing it! I have cut out milk this week just to see if that makes it any better, but since it isn't bothering her, I wasn't being overly cautious.

I don't believe that gas itself causes crying. I think it is when they are irritated, say from being overstimulated or tired, and then every little thing sets them off.

Some babies are in pain from the gas which would cause crying...

I am sorry. I meant to say I don't think it is ALWAYS painful gas. Sometimes just annoying gas.

We definitely had a case of painful gas when I was eating dairy.

On another slightly related topic, MIL keeps mistaking that Rosti is having painful gas. When he is overtired and she won't listen to me and do the things that I know calm him so he can sleep, he frequently lunges forward in a way that looks like doubling over. I can definitely see why it appears to be gas in this case. But I have been observing him long enough to know he does it when he needs some external help to sooth him.

I had a really colicky baby and it was so hard, i totally understand

I went to the natural food store and bought some homeopathic tablets specifically for babies with colic and it helped SO SO much. He falls farts and falls asleep whenever he takes them. I really couldn't believe how much they helped.
