Runny nose/cough/dairy connection

Starting last fall, my ds's nose started running and did not stop, basically, for about 8 months. Then the snot stopped but in its place came a really dry hacking cough that lasted the whole summer (June-Aug).

In late August I stopped giving him milk to drink and decreased other dairy in his diet but I haven't been super strict about it (he still gets an occasional yogurt or slice of cheese if he asks).

Strangely enough, ever since I stopped the milk the cough has gone but the snot is back. Has anyone else ever had an experience similar to this?

We've just had to remove dairy to help with tummy troubles, but ds also has rhinitus (ie a plugged nose). It is much worse in the fall. I think here its mostly because of the increased dust from harvest. Our doctor said that a lot of plugged / nose problems are seasonal or worse during one season. I don't know if that helps or not
