Thanks everyone!
We're settling in nicely. He is the easiest of any of our kids so far -- he nurses well, has lots of "quiet alert" times when he looks around and looks at us, and he sleeps at night. He wakes often to nurse, of course, but he goes right back to sleep and he's the first baby I've been able to nurse lying down right from the start. My dd is still nursing and that's been a bit tricky to juggle, but she's learning to wait.
Dh is on leave now which is such a help with the house and older kids. My recovery is going well -- I had one small tear, they said it was like a scrape more than a tear, and it didn't need stitches. My midwife mentioned this time that keeping my bladder empty makes the afterpains less painful, and it made a big difference -- they were much worse last time than this time. I had a couple of difficult times, being weepy or moody, after my milk came in, but having dh here to help and family and friends bringing meals so I'm not so stressed and busy has made a huge difference. I took full advantage of him being here to stay in bed as long as possible after the birth, since I've heard that doing too much too soon can cause problems with later pregnancies.
We have almost decided on a name. We're quite sure we're naming him Rasmus (it's a name from back in my family, from Danish ancestors, and it's a form of Erasmus which means "beloved"), but we're still hemming and hawing over a middle name. I think James is good. So far, we've given our kids less usual first names and very well-known middle names, so they have an out if they decide they don't like being so unusual And I think James fits well with Rasmus and our last name (similar to Simpson). But dh isn't quite sure about it yet. My oldest ds doesn't like the name Rasmus -- he says it sounds evil.
The boys don't seem to be disappointed that Rasmus was a boy; they wanted a girl so our family would be even. But D has already said that next time, we just have to have twin girls. M, my little girl, is absolutely in love with him, and spends a lot of time patting his head and hugging him.
