how much do you spend on groceries every month? - Page 4

Sugarandsun, you'll be happy to know all that stuff is a lot cheaper for you than it would be for me

I am really stuggling with groceries. I used to be able to spend $50 a week for the four of us, but now I find it hard to stay under $100. Food is just getting so expensive and we don't eat much meat, only eat organic if it's cheaper or comparatively priced, don't buy milk (although I get a few big bags of powdered skim milk a year for cooking, DD's cereal and the occasional drinking; I'd love to get organic milk but it is more than $6 for 2L and we would easily go through a carton a day if it were in the house). I am cutting corners everywhere and we may have to start eating differently due to suspected sensitivies in our family. I don't know how we'll do it.

We are DH, me, 2 yo DS, and EBF DD (and a sweet kitty). All vegetarians. (well, not the kitty)

When I shop at Whole Foods, we are 175/week.
When I shop at Jewel (Albertson's), we are 145/wk.
When I shop at Garden Fresh Market (ethnic market with enormous produce section and all kinds of cool food in other languages), we are 100/wk but I bet I could get it lower there.

I only buy organic milk, but when the weekly half gallon is gone, it's soy until next week.
Only kosher/veggie rennet cheese.
As much org produce as I can find, but sometimes it's just too ridiculously priced. A 5 dollar red pepper??? I can't do it.
I also tend to spend too much on vegetarian "fake meat" stuff, but it makes cooking soooo easy and DS loves it! Oh well.

Bear in mind we eat out WAAAY too much. That is stopping as of last weekend, when I learned that we had lost like 200 dollars in NSF fees

ETA: hey Canadian mamas, you are posting Canadian Dollars, right? Or no? Just to clarify.

$250/mo. on just food for DH, 2 yr old and myself
$50/mo. on personal care, toilet paper, etc (not including hair cuts)
$20/mo. on dog food
$110/mo. eating out

I buy hormone-free milk, which is about same price as cheapest brand and the only thing I buy organic is eggs, carrots and a few fruits. I mostly cook from scratch, but I like to buy Hamburger or Chicken Helpers for when I'm lazy : I stock up when I find good deals.

I am feeding three adults (me, dh, my mom), a 10 yr old, and a 2 yr old and 4 yr old. I spend about $650- $700 a month. This is just food. I buy dog food ect at a discount store, so I don't add that in my grocery $.
I cook a lot from scratch too. I make atleast 3 loaves of bread a week, make my own pizza dough, can from our garden ect. I like to have a LOT of food around me though. There was a period of time when I was a teen when I was homeless and hungry. Now I like to go into the grocery and buy whatever I want. It really distresses me when I can't. I would love to get the $$$ down, but stuff is so expensive here.
Recently I found Aldis' which is super cheap, but none of it is organic.

Yep. The dollar is at par right now, but food is still more expensive. Canadian regulations are stricter which drives up the prices, plus a lot of our food is imported from the US so there's a customs cost. The average family in my (AP/NFL) parenting group spends $600.
