I am posting here since I "think" homeschoolers will be more familiar with Saxon Math.
My oldest DD is in high school this year. We tried homeschooling her but she didn't like it and wanted to be in school. Last year she went to our local Middle School. There she took Algebra 1. Most schools around here use Prentice Hall for their math. When she moved on to high school she was supposed to be in Integrated Math.
Well our local high school is 500 students over their limit. There are 35+ students to a class, they are having classes in the halls and libraries, and it is generally not an ideal or pleasant situation. On the 2nd day of school she came home and told me she wanted to drop out.
So I found her another, better high school to go to. The entire district only has 400 students and I don't think there are more than 80 in the entire high school. This school is respectful in it's approach as they are no bells. They believe the students are old enough to figure out to get to class on their own. They also allow the kids to have MP3 players/IPODS in class since they know when it is appropriate to use them and when it is not. (I really wish I would have found this school district BEFORE we moved to Oregon.) In the younger grades it lets the children advance when they are ready. You aren't held hostage by your age group. They have 5th graders in Algebra. Ok with all that said, here is the problem.
As I said, last year DD had Algebra 1 in 8th grade. It was considered and honors class as 8th graders generally don't take Algebra. She ended the class with an A even. When we moved to the new school she was automatically put in Algebra2 (and 10th grade class.) She has already had Algebra 1 so there should be no problem right? Wrong. DD is really struggling with it and having problems keeping up. There are many things in there that she simply has never even been taught. And I was slightly concerned when I noticed that the new school uses Saxon as opposed to the Prentice Hall everyone else uses.
So, I don't want DD to feel like she failing somehow or moving back. Which is why I am asking anyone who is familiar with Saxon Math to please let me know if it is just more intense than other math programs. Is it possible that the Algebra 1 in Saxon covered much more material than the Algebra 1 PH? She wasn't even going to have an Algebra 2 this year anyway, originally it was Integrated 2 (whatever that is.)
So anyway.. I just wanted opinions from people who are experiance with this program. Thanks,
