Falling out of chairs

My 4 year old is going to get hurt one of these days. He constantly falls out of the kitchen chair.

I look over and he just falls. For no reason.

He is gonna get hurt! (Like with a fork in his eye or something....its so fun being a mom and visualizing these things.)

Does your child fall out of chairs?

My 3yo dd does it because she saw her big brother do it...natural consequences are the best teacher, IMO. They think it's hilarious...me...not so much. :

My dd does sometimes, but she has glasses for poor depth perception. Perhaps get your ds' eyes checked.

ooh, hmmm....thank you for the advice-I would have never thought of that!

What other things would I look for in terms of needing glasses in the meantime?

OMG! DD does this all the time! And it is not a depth perception issue, it is a "I refuse to actually put the entire tush in the chair at dinner time" issue! I can't tell you how many times I say 'please sit in your chair properly' during a meal!

And it is quite the sight when all 5 of us are at the table for dinner and suddenly there are just 4!

The way you phrased that... any chance he's doing it to get your attention? My little girl used to do that all the time... until the day she cracked her chin on the table and figured out that it could really HURT!

Is falling out of chairs the only kind of accident he is prone to? If more, maybe not enough sleep or maybe an ear infection messing up his sense of balance.

no we have this problem too b/c like someone said his toosh is not on the chair all the way. sometimes he gets really tired and is practicallly falling on purpose.

My DS does this too. He'll be 7 in December. He has Asperger Syndrome and is very sensitive to touch on that area of his body, plus he almost loses track of where his body is if it's not moving. He just can't *sit* in a chair and gives the impression that he's pratfalling on purpose (gives Dick van Dyke a run for his money). Through working with OTs, we have come up with some tools to help him. At school he has a wedge shaped rubber inflatable cushion for his chair (which he uses nubbly side up). At home he either uses his beanbag chair or we have bands around the legs of the kitchen chair he rests (and wiggles) his feet on.

My 5 year old used to fall out of chairs multiple times a day. Since he has been seeing an OT weekly for sensory processing disorder, he doesn't fall out of his chair nearly as often.
