safe to take dom. long-term?

I've been taking domperidone for a month and a half now, and during that time I tried to wean once which plummeted my milk supply. I'm at the point of needing to order more (or think about weaning again, which I'm petrified to do), and was wondering if it's fine to take it long-term. My baby is only 3 1/2 months so there's still a lot of breastfeeding to do. Any thoughts?

I've have taken it 4 times now, last 4 babies and took it between 9-12 months each time.

I've heard that it can cause heart problem in babies. I think there were a few threads here before. try searching the archives.

I took it for over 6 months I think....no side effects at all!

Never heard of heart problems in babies. The reasont the FDA issued the warning here was from something that was reported when people were getting very high doses via an IV and there were heart issues in them......

I personally have never heard of a Mama or baby having issues from domperidone. It saved our nursing relationship, I am so happy I was able to get some.

I'm going to bump the Domperidone FAQ. It is an L1 drug by Thomas Hale in "Medications and Mother's Milk", which is the very safest category for baby (and safer than many post csection narcotics & antidepressants, but I digress). Many, many people think the FDA overreacted by issuing its "warning" in nursing moms:

I personally know many people who took it for several months (myself included) perfectly safely. Of course it is up to you to decide, in consultation with your health care provider, if you care to consult with one.

I took Dom for 20 months straight. From Nov. 2005-Aug. 2007 The only thing I noticed is that my diarrea was a bit better off of it (I have Crohn's disease though so who knows?)

The heart warnings were for patients receiving very high doses via IV AND they had pre-existing heart conditions

I took Dom Peridone for over a year and didn't have any side effects that I'm aware of. The only one was a brutal headache when I weaned off it, and of course my milk supply dropped as well.

can i sub in for second please? how much does domperidone help supply?

i have IGT and there is NO chance that i will ever produce nearly enough to not use formula with sns/lact-aid. i know ever ounce helps, but with 2 other kids, a crazy scheule, and a VERY tight budget, i am trying to weigh the benefits. i have heard it only helps produce an extra ounce or two per day.

your experiences?

thank you so much!!!

I have HORRID IGT and with domperidone, a medical pump, every tea you can think of... but more so with dom - I got up to 12 ounces in a 24 hour cycle with pumping every 2-4 hours.

It was very worth it and I will take it with me to the hospital for next baby.

I am BFAR and with my first baby I was able to pump only a few ounces a session. With this baby, I’ve been seeing Dr. Newman and taking 4 pills, four times a day and pretty much exclusively breastfeeding this baby-no pumping! So, I’d say it makes a world of difference in the milk supply!
