Q about early/late development....

Not sure where this goes but would like input from a variety of moms....

I was wondering about skills that develop early. If your child has an "early" ability, is that considered a gift or does it all even out later? For example, my DS seems to have a well developed fine motor skill even at 1 year old. My DD on the other hand is "delayed" in fine motor skills and struggles with them. My guess is that by 3rd grade you won't be able to tell the difference....but maybe DS will always have a great fine motor skill?

Not that I'm looking for a gifted fine motor kid - just was interested after watching my kids develop so differently....(they are almost 4 and 1)

I've read that kids "catch up" by 3rd grade or so....but if you see something develop early, do you consider that a "gift"? (I'm not talking about classically gifted kids, here, but just an early ability) Do any of you with older kids have things that developed early in them (motor, memory, music, reading etc) but that evened out later on (their peers caught up)?

I've just been wondering about this and was interested in what others experiences are....

Depends. Not a good answer.

Some kids will keep their more highly developed skills and some will level out. In the early years it is so hard to say what will happen. I think I encourage my kids in areas where they tend to do very well but don't discourage them in others. In general kids even out between K and 3rd grade as you mentioned.

Very interesting topic.

I find this interesting too...

I take care of a 2 yr old who has been talking since she was 15 months or so (in full sentences) and now that she is older her vocabulary just keeps increasing and you can just see the wheels turning in her head as she tries to figure out how to tell you what she is thinking about. Will she grow up to be the next Emiliy Dickinson? Or maybe in 12 months there won't be anything spectacular about the way she talks at all because it will be more age appropriate.

My oldest has always had a great vocabulary and it still is more developed than alot of her peers but it doesn't stand like it used to. People used to think she was 3 or 4 when she was 15months because of how she talked.

My youngest has always had great fine motor skills but lags in gross motor. *shrugs*
