Any Vegans TTC? - Page 50

welcome snowbell! I've been trying for a long time also, but I cannot eat meat just because. I don't think it would be helpful either. But I understand the quest for "why? what's wrong? what can I do?" so for you.

veganmama, why would you run, you already rode your bike and walked a lot. that's plenty of workout to me.

I've been riding my bike to work the past 4 workdays, I'm really proud. it's thirty mins. each ride there and back

vegancupcake depending on where you live I suppose you'll walk a lot with a carrier anyway. I imagine stuffing everything into the car and out is a hassle sometimes. but I don't know anything about it.

We live in a great neighbourhood for walking, biking and bussing. Really there is no reason for us to have a second car. We need one for the massive grocery shopping we seem to do and transporting the kids when the weather is too bad outside. DH drives to work (7 minutes) but he really could easily bike. I don't really want him doing too much biking when we are TTC though!

Welcome Snowbell. I have to admit, it has crossed my mind too. I got PG so easily when I was an omni. However, I was also younger then. According to Randine Lewis, vegan diets are not good for people with kidney Yang deficiency. However, you can eat walnuts to make up for not eating organ meats (oh my gosh, how gross is that?).

Anyway, we have two graduates that didn't seem to have any problems getting pg as vegans.

catemom, are you around? We miss you!

AFM, I am 7 DPO. Still not really feeling it this month and temps aren't spectacular. It's early yet though.

Hello Everyone!

Sorry that AF has made the rounds . I am due in a few days myself and it's not very exciting or suspenseful since we didn't try this month. I'm hoping and praying that all this tumor crap will be over with soon so I can get back to ttc.

Welcome Snowbell!

Veganmama Hope your DH heals quickly from the surgery! What did you think of the "Build-a-Bear" party? Was it something the kids really loved? I'm asking because we have one here and DS loves stuffed animals.

Vegancupcake It looks like you'll be able to find out the sex of your baby soon (unless you've already found out). Are you going to find out or are you wanting a surprise?

Oceane and Snowpea I was thinking about you two and have decided that you both need to find some time (and possibly creative financing) so that you can take your DHs on a relaxing vacation somewhere (even if it's just a long weekend a couple of hours away). It's definitely more complicated and less relaxing to take vacations when you have little ones, so I say go for it while you can!

Have an excellent Monday, ladies!

catemom, the sex will be a surprise until September! I'm starting to get the "what are you having"s though.

And I second catemom's suggestion to go on vacation. We're going on a cruise in about 3 weeks, and we are so excited. And then there's our anniversary in June and I really hope DH has something up his sleeve for that. It is so rejuvenating. And good for the libido, at the very least!

good to hear from you, catemom. we're actually going to Nova Scotia in late May. I admit it's hardly relaxing moving and painting and having to let potential new renters in all the time... but I'm hoping that by May 1st we can hand the keys over and be done with the old apartment. Then we still have to pretty up the new place, of course anyway, I've heard Paris Hilton wants to name her kids after the place of conception, so we better not make a baby in Cape Chignecto

where are you going to/stopping at, catherine?

veganmama, we wouldn't get two cars either. one is even more than I want. I hope your Dh gets better soon so he can take care of the kids and give you some time off!

where are the amandas? and lilgreen?

I have another question for the Canadians among us: do you buy/do you know of any vegan DHA supplements that are available at chains or particular stores? or do you always order them from somewhere? thanks!

Awww... thanks for thinking of me! I've been lurking a bit, but I'm in full thesis-writing mode and am not letting myself get too distracted. I must be done by the end of June.

Sorry AF visited some of you this cycle I hope next time I visit this thread there will be some good news!

If all goes as planned, we will officially be ttc in about 20 days or so.

Good luck everyone!

I'm here! Just reading along and waiting. I'm on day 13 and this cycle is mirroring my last so far, so I'm hoping it'll continue to be predictable for the next few cycles since we're beginning TTC next month.

I tabled at our local MeatOut yesterday, and aside from being a great event, it was excellent to see so many veg babies and pregnant moms. There was an adorable kiddo, maybe 14 months old, in a sling who was so precious that my ovaries were screaming.

Oh good, Lil Green and AmandaI didn't know you guys were lurking. I guess next time we'll just mention your names It's so nice to see you both.

oceane, I get vegan DHA and prenatals online. I haven't seen any in the health food stores here and I am in a bigger city than any in Nova Scotia. But maybe they are more enlightened down there. Vegan Essentials is where I usually get them.

I found out today that my acupunturist/licenced naturopathic doctor, who I really really like, used to be a vegan activist (I didn't even know she was vegan at one point) but now eats a small amount of meat. She said she wasn't healthy without it. I asked her if she thought being vegan was detrimental to TTC (especially as snowbell was musing about this earlier) not really sure what I was going to do with her answer. She says she does think that for some people but she doesn't think I need to eat meat. She does want to see my ferritin levels "out of the basement" but they were like that when I was an omni as well. I'm on a new iron supplement now that she raves about. Other than that she says I am extremely healthy and my diet is ideal.

I once told her that my 4 year old has only eaten at McDonald's once in his life (when we were in Florida recently) so now she thinks I am some kind of paragon of healthy living, LOL!

veganmama, yes, sometimes I don't really want to hear all the answers... but good to know you can up your iron with that supplement. maybe I should look into iron more, though my last blood panel showed no signs of anemia. I do feel tired, but I also hate spending 6 hours/day in front of a computer screen at work, so...

(I have never "quoted" before, so forgive me if I mess this up.)

Hi everyone!

Veganmama, I find what your acupuncturist said interesting. My acupuncturist responded in pretty much the same way. It is interesting because all of my Western medicine Drs. said it was fine that I was vegan but my acupuncturist is the one who believes a little bit of meat might be good for me. But she also said that I have to do what I believe is right and that her opinion is only the opinion of Eastern medicine. My main concern on being vegan is that my iron levels are HORRIBLE. If I remember correctly it should be between 22 - 200 and mine is 12. After three months of trying iron supplements it went DOWN to 10! But I also think I am someone who had low iron when I was omni. Veganmama, which iron supplements do you use?

I just can't imagine eating meat though. I did contemplate eating ice cream after reading the Newsweek article on conception and diet (someone on this board posted it awhile back). Has anyone heard anything else about ice cream increasing the odds of conceiving?

But all of that said, I really think a healthy vegan diet is the way to go. Again, I want to thank all of you because you have really helped me to become passionate about being vegan again. In fact, I am off to make a vegan version of Pasta e Fagioli. I'll let y'all know how it turns out!:

snowbell, according to chinese medicine dairy is terrible for TTC. I have also read recently that it makes your body more acidic and that's not good for conception either. I think that article was saying that full fat dairy is better than low fat dairy.

My iron was 5 last time it was checked. And that was before the miscarriage. It takes 3 months to create red blood cells. I've been on the iron supplement for 2 months. It is only available through health care providers here I think. It is called Hemagenics by Metagenics. The drug store stuff never did anything for my iron levels.
Thanks for the iron supplement name. I'll see if I can get it through my medical provider.

Snowbell, I'd say the ice cream thing for fertility is a bit sketchy, too. If you're getting quality fats (nuts, avocados, etc.), I think that's much better than ice cream. Honestly, I'm not sure how to apply that study to veganism, since it really was talking about people eating the Standard American Diet. Overall, most of the recollections are very supportive of veganism, except for the ice cream thing.

My midwife believes in the Eat Right For Your Type diet, but she's not pushy about it. According to the diet, as an O+, I would do best eating a lot of red meat. She told me that at my first visit and I just laughed and said there was no chance I was going to eat red meat. However, most of her dietary recommendations are fantastic (or would be if I didn't have so many food aversions): lots of greens, nuts, whole grains, limited sugar, etc.

I'm taking Floradix liquid iron supplement because my iron is borderline. It's doesn't taste too bad--and it's non-constipating! I don't know yet whether it is helping me, but I am hopeful!

Somebody a few days ago asked me where we were going on our "babymoon" . We're going to the Mexican Riviera, so Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas. I was thinking I could find a rebozo in a market somewhere, but I'm wondering if everywhere we go will be too tourist-y. Anyone know that?
I asked that, vegancupcake. Of the three places I only know cabo from spring break type shows I suppose if you have enough time to explore the town there will be places not that touristy.
Vegancupcake, I think you will be able to find a rebozo. My friend who just came back from Puerto Vallerta said she saw some. What a great trip you are going to have!

On a different topic...I had my first IUI on Monday and I had slight spotting/bleeding an hour after it. Has anyone else ever experienced bleeding after an IUI?
Catherine, I specifically asked my acu/naturopath about the blood type diet stuff this week as I am O+ too. She said i definitely don't need to eat red meat, LOL!

I have never had an IUI snowbell but I would think it was not unusual. It's probably some spotting from the cervix.

Hello All!

I just watched a really interesting "Frontline" (news show on public tv in US) on universal health care. They covered the health care systems in the UK, Japan, Germany, Taiwan, and Switzerland. They mentioned Canada in passing, but didn't go in depth. I liked it because they talked about the pros and cons of each system, never implying that any one was perfect (although I thought the docs looked like they actually thought of their patients as human beings instead of cranky lab rats). Those of you in the US, try to watch this one if you can--very interesting.

I just had a conversation with a hospital mw, nurse, and an exercise physiologist about whether or not to trust nutrition advice from people who aren't nutritionists. We all decided that only a doctor of nutrition knows what the heck they are talking about.

Have a great day you fantastic vegans!
catemom, I so wanted to watch that! I was out doing church-related visits last night and everybody had either American Idol or The Biggest Loser on TV, and that reminded me that I wanted to DVR Frontline! Bah, forgot. Have to get it on Netflix in a year or something.

oceane, you cracked me up with the Cabo/MTV spring break thing! I'll have to get in on a wet T shirt contest or something.

Argh, I forgot that Frontline was on tonight! Bummer.

Vegan ice cream: http://veganicecream.blogspot.com/
A friend of mine just made some, and she swears it's as good as dairy ice cream. Not sure of its TTC abilities, but ice cream can't hurt, right?

I spoke too soon about my perfectly predictable cycle. I'm either going to O early, or I'm going to have over a week of Extreme Eggwhite. I think I could slide down the stairs on it. (Sorry for the TMI. ) Too bad I'm swimmerless.

I went to a benefit dinner tonight, and one of my husband's coworkers brought her kids, 1.5 and 3.5. I don't remember my son being as... nightmarishly difficult...as the little one was. I'm scared.

Of course, part of my irritability might be hunger related, since I was stuck eating dry salad, pasta with no sauce (it was meat sauce), and dry bread. The baby seemed to enjoy her spaghetti, though, as she dumped an entire plate of it on the table in front of me and used her pudgy little arms to spread it around. She was probably full, though, from the entire bowl of dinner mints she polished off right before that. Did I mention I'm scared?
