im looking for a pattern to make coasters out of cotton, i was thinking square i tought i could do seed stitch border make 5 stiches then stosknet in the middle. id like them to be square- do you think this would work ok?

I don't know why not. You might have to do a little tinkering to get the numbers right so that they come out square (depending on your gauge and the yarn you're using), but it sounds like you're halfway there with the pattern in your head, anyway. I have never seen a pattern for cotton coasters, I think because they'd be so easy to either make up or adapt a dishcloth pattern for.

I've doubled the yarn, keeping the needles smallish and adapted dishcloth patterns for this purpose. My faves so far are the mitered square and one I did based on Knitty's Hoover Blanket (matches the bath mat I did too).
