Bought some raw kombucha - question?

I bought some raw organic kombucha at the HFS and it has lots of strings and a little floating lump. I don't want to drink the strings - can I strain them out? And if so, can I use them to start my own kombucha? I know someone mentioned being able to start growing a scoby from raw kombucha you purchased at the store but I wasn't sure how. TIA

Yes, you can strain them out but leave some liquid too, about 1/4 cup should do. All of that together will be your starter. Then you brew some black tea with white sugar, pour in the starter and behold the magic! Also, JSYK, you can drink the strings too - I usually do and I've never been bothered. I can't even feel them. HTH!

The little floating lump maybe a part of a scoby?
