Today at work I participated in an audioconference about stress and brain development in young children. The speaker was Dr. Bruce Perry (MD and PhD). He had great information about the effects of trauma and stress on brain development in infants and young children, and stressed the importance of a warm and loving start for newborns. During the question and answer period he was asked about his opinion of the effect of the stress of circumcision (*can't imagine who asked that one
*)
His response was that circumcision IS very stressful and that his recommendation is that there is no reason to do it. The audience for this conference was people working with pregnant women, infants and toddlers in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. It was nice that these professionals could hear that opinion from an "expert."
