Kefir Woes

Ok, so I finally got raw milk. I already love the butter and yoghurt it provides for us, but I'm looking to find a place less than $6 a gallon (DH is super cheap and it gives him a heart attack every time - like we'll have to redo the budget because we spend an extra $3 on a gallon of milk : ).

Anyways, it took me since I joined MDC to find a source for Kefir in my area. I finally found an Amish family (don't ask how) who could get a culture for me, and got it. It's a one-time culture, unfortunately, but we worked it out that I'd get a different culture of theirs that you can use multiple times from now on.

Anyways.

I made my kefir, set it out, loosely covered, for 24 hours. I look at the Kefir, and there's GREEN AND WHITE MOLD ALL OVER the top of it!

What did I do wrong? Can I just scrape it off? :

Help me, TF mommas! You're my only hope!

That's really strange. I think the answer is to find someone who can mail you some kefir grains. I've never had any trouble with mold using grains.
